I would think there's a good chance it is the socket at the bottom of the gear lever under the plate AndyC mentions. I had this on my ABY Coupe - when I bought it it was very difficult to select first without going into reverse and vice versa. The ball at the bottom of the gear lever sits in a nylon socket which is attached to it's housing with rubber which had come adrift in several places allowing the socket to move around. See pic.
Bought a new one from Vagparts for about £40 I think and it was sorted. Fairly easy to do, just need to adjust the plate correctly to allow the lever to select reverse etc
    Hope this helps

      All good input for sure.

      Thanks bud

All seems to look like ball joints plus adjustment ...

Hope so as with new rs2 clutch in it would be great to have silky gear change as well.

Looks like I got one of the problems mentioned in this thread with my ABY coupe.
After a misshift from 1st into 2nd gear it's hard to select the 2nd gear from 1st and 3rd, so on acceleration and deceleration.
There is also almost no movement in the gear stick when in neutral, before this there were no problems selecting gears.

What would be the cause most likely?

Does it shift ok without the clutch, or if you double de-clutch?

My honda accord has a syncromesh problem so selecting 3rd from 2nd gear is impossible without grinding (the higher the rpm, the harder it is). So from 2nd, I go quickly to 4th (apparently using a different syncromesh) and then 3rd to get a smooth shift.

Takes a while to get used to but I don't know if this is something similar. I thought these gearboxes were pretty tough so it could be something else.

Tried that but the problem remains.
