  • Change oil in RS2 gearbox, need help

    Hello!

I am going to change the oil in my RS2 transmission, and im wondering. Does it exis an "how to" on this topic?

It's 2 plugs to remove to drain the oil, but only one too refill oil. So when I refill thru the one hole i found to fill, does this fill up both "chambers" ?

    Pardon my poor english

To renew, remove the top plug first. Then remove the lower and drain the fluid. Then fill from the top plug until the level reaches the hole and replace the top plug.

It is the same procedure for the rear diff too. HTH

Hi the fill level is 7mm before the reaching the gearbox hole, you can use an allen key as a marker

This maybe a daft question, but why does the Avant take less oil than the Coupe? Surely they use the same gearbox?

Thanks everyone! We eventually figured it out, and then understood how it was

Jamo and s-express: where have you get these from, i asked my mate that work in the workshop @Audi if it was like this, and he said no...

i am also unsure on this, why should an rs2 have lower oil level than an s2? if the oil level should be below the hole to fill, why the hell did audi put it 16mm above the oil level, that´s just silly..

Looking at 01E tranny manual here. It calls out 2.7 liters of fluid.

On older 01E gearboxes (S2 and RS2) the filler plug is towards rear of the driveshaft flange. Manual states oil level should be 7mm (seven) below bottom edge of filler hole.

Newer 01E boxes (later than S2/RS2 applications) have a filler plug towards the front... Manual states oil level should be 1mm (one) below bottom edge of filler.

On the rear diff, oil level is conveniently at the bottom edge of filler plug. Capacity of 1.5liter there.

it feels weird that it should sit 7mm under the plug.. i will try my car with oil level @ the plug anyways, but i might have wrong, but it doesent feel right..

I've always filled the gearbox until it flows from the fill hole, it always runs down a bit on the gears so when it flows through the hole, it "should" be enough, never killed a tranny because if this anyway (AFAIK)

Anyone know the answer to this?
this is slight confusing.. does he mean older 01E by 5gearbox? And newer 6speed?

Or meaning all boxes with s2 n rs2 are old?

As he put later than s2 rs2, is that a typo? Were these boxes used after s2 n rs2 in newer cars hence matching what he is saying?

I have a 6speed aby.. so its either 1mm or 7mm from fill cap... ahh!!

                          Please help xx

A very old post to drag up. The workshop manual for the S2 states 7mm below the filler. 01E is the generic name for manual 6 speed boxes. Lots of cars after the S2 were fitted with an 01E box which is what Paul was referring to
