The Audi Sport gearboxes didn't have centre diffs either - if i was you james i'd get a spare centre diff and weld it then you can swap it out if need be and lock the rear when required

Locked centerdiff works fine for uneven or loose surfaces such as gravel/dirt/snow.
In theory a locked reardiff gives off-power understeer, and on-power oversteer. Big disadvantage is that the rear axle will behave as a solid axle under braking and cornering, therefor having a negative influence on the amount of yaw the rear tires can handle.

All these effects are even worse because of the 500lbs lump they call 'engine' in front of the axle

James, come up here and try to drive my ur with both diffs locked before you do anything daft, very hard to get it to go round corners, the tyres are scrubbing like mad, only useful for getting out of muddy fields or in the snow. Locking the front diff will stop the car from steering at all..

youll need a hydraulic hand brake then as well so can manage corners.

i do remember reading a article front the 80's that talked about a typ 85 90 with a diff lock the front, i think they just moded the front housing to use a rear diff and mechanism. would you not be better with a lsd some form the front, such as a torsion or atb and then run locked, lsd ete other axles
