As U can see, 5.th. gear spread all over the box.
Doesn´t sound nice.
Now the RS2 type has taken over.

Why dont you guys use the 016 URQ box? Isnt it the strongest box? Maybe the ratios are bad or something? Thanks,des.

Well i got myself a 016 gearbox in spare.... Guess when you say sport you mean from the S1 or what?

I put the gear ratios into a program and worked out the speeds in gears etc. Seem OK to me in a URQ. Am i missing something? Maybe its the S2 uses bigger wheels so the ratios are higher? Here is a pic of the speeds i have. on 225/50/15 rubber on a post 83 box

Its the spacing on many 016 boxes I had the problem with. A good reckoner for gear SPACING on a 5-speed box is a difference in ratio of 1.5. This has been implemented on many a sports car since the dawn of time. I have a book on the works spec URs that lists the gear ratios and they were done by the rally team to achieve a spacing of 1.5.

Example of this is changing gear at 6000rpm - with a 1.5 spacing you get the next gear at 4000rpm - which should be bang in the max torque area for most of us. Like I say its a rule of thumb, but if the spacing is too close (much below 1.5) or too distant (much above 1.5) you run the risk of picking up less than optimal engine speeds where less torque is being developed.

I've developed my own gearing calculator for this stuff and there are combinations of 016 gears that can be mixed to improve things.

Other factors come into play - such as getting the right ratios for getting 60mph in 2nd gear - or 100mph in 3rd. The 01E 6-speed box on the S2 runs closer to 1.25 spacing on average - by nature of having the extra gear - this closer spacing works nicely in the mid range by keeping the engine in the strong torque range of the 20V engine.

Paul if you would have exact preferences for the gearbox wheels/ratios or blue prints then it would be possible to manufacture them. Probably in Russia. They can make wonder things on their old military facilities for pennies.

First to second is a bit of a jump, but you will be accelerating so quickly through 1st and second that won’t matter so much.

It gives a good advantage having the taller gears closer together where the engine needs the extra power with this box. I don’t think its bad at all, but then I haven’t drove it with the 20VT engine yet.
