I had a new rd made for mne from a bolt! Cost me £15 to have a mate do it wen it snapped on way back from Cornwall! Not a pleasant journey home.

There are 2 seals one behind the other, when the first seal starts to let go some fluid gets past it back to the reservoir side as you push your foot down so the clutch ends up not fully depressed. Prob with the clutch circuit is it doesn't get bled as often as the brakes so the fluid goes off and things start to corrode, a little corrosion wears the lip of the seal away and Robert's your mother's brother..
I've honed and re-sealed them in the past but they don't last long and its such a pain to do.. Take the seat out and throw a few cushions in there to lie on..Comment

Mine did the same after being laid up most of last winter. After a few weeks of driving it has cleared up and gone away. I inspected the master cylinder linkage and it seemed fine. The master cylinder is relatively new, circa 5 years and 40k motorway miles, so I don't suspect it has gone yet.mine does this every once in awhile as well. but the car normally sits for long periods of time.
i pump it a whole bunch of times, and it seems to correct itself. then out of the blue, its on the floor.
it did it a couple times, then i jumped in to move the car and it was fine.
It is laid up again now, so I wonder if this phenomenon will return.
Pumping the pedal seems to cure it for me.

I have a nearly new brake master cylinder as my own car suffered a similar fault and we changed it along with the clutch.Comment

Try bleeding slave cylinderThe other day, a couple of times when I depressed my clutch, the thing stayed half down until I flicked it back up with the toe of my shoe.
Today it did it a couple of times, but tonight it has been going right to the floor, and staying there, so I have to squeeze my foot underneath and use some strengh to pull it back up. Its as if the pedal is stiff or frozen?
I had the (!) symbol come on one time too?
Just before the gear change was really stiff to get it into neutral too?
Is it the Clutch, The Master Cylinder, that linkage a few people mentioned, or is it just a dead mouse under the dash thats fallen on the Clutch pedal linkages in its fall from chewing my Speedo Binnacle's wiring loom?

These are actually for the ur-quattro - parts of them may be relevant:

Funny one this.
My clutch was fine until i changed the clutch pressure plate then the problem with the pedal staying down started. The pedal would barely come back up and needed lifting back up by hooking it with my foot.
The only conclusion i came to was the return (helper) springs on the pedal were too strong, i removed one of them and it's fine now.The ONLY S2 Golf!

Is there a quick temp fix that will keep me mobile until after Xmas? My pedal is getting stuck half way down every time now. I have to flick it up for every gear now? I have the (!) light and been going now, and feels like a spongy clutch and even brake does too!
Can I bleed it somehow? Is this why there is some fluid on the rubber gaiter if the master cylinder?Comment
