You're right Steve, use the 016 box, WR flywheel and clutch, you need to drive a spigot bearing into the end of the crankshaft, they are the same from Audi 100> '87, Coupe type 85, Ur quattro WR. Use the mounts off the type 85 Coupe quattro, that bolts straight onto your subframe. You'll need the electronic speedo drive from a quattro turbo or 200 quattro turbo, clutch slave cylinder from a type 85 Coupe quattro. The linkage from your original 5 speed is not suitable. You need to use an ABY item, which utilises the same top (front) fitting as the 016, (you'll need to rotate the base of the shift lever , so the reverse lock is to the rear / left) and your driveshafts bolt straight on. Don't use an 016 box from a 200 quattro turbo or an Ur quattro, as the front differential ratio is a 3.89:1, whereas the S2 is a 4.11:1, which matches the rear differential. Only the type 85 Coupe quattro, type 85 90 quattro and type 44 100 quattro > 87 are the correct ratio. The box used in the Sport quattro is no stronger than those used in the Coupe quattro, they all have the same torque limit. The whole conversion should take no longer than a weekend, note the 016 box is quite heavy and is best tackled by 2 people. Bearing in mind the quattro 016 boxes can be had for as little as £70 from a breakers, there is no reason not to take this option, if your S2 5 speed is busted. I would'nt remove a healthy S2 5 speed though, till it goes BANG!

The gear spacing was fine on type 85 Coupe / 90 quattros. I used that in my old car, and it was excellent. The early Ur quattros (WR) used a different spacing, which left a large gap between 2nd and 3rd, and was quite nasty to drive with any engine combination. :eek2: :eek2:

will the propshaft need changing as well due to it not having a torsen?

No, propshaft will not need replacing, as the torsen and non - torsen 016 boxes are the same length from bellhousing to prop. mounting flange.

@Vagsport, thanks for the info m8, I was still wondering if my brand new 016 could handle my 450+ project but apparently it will, good to know that! For what it's worth, I can get brand new 016 coupe quattro boxes (US code) for 700 Euros + shipping and quite a few of them. BUT, as far as I know, on a type 89 car, one has to swap the propshaft to the earlier type, because of the length, my friend Nate Stuart from the US has already BTDT with a type 89 90q. The lever assembly can also quite easily be welded at home for perfect fitment.

Here's his page about this issue BTW http://www.newtsplace.com/90tq/index...e=Transmission

                Cheers

                  Siena,

Thanks for the info on the 016 box....If my S2 box goes bang, I think I'll be asking a few more questions before I undertake the change over:wacked:

                  Cheers

Got on to the gearbox people who rebuilt mine 14000 miles ago/13 months ago and they are going to have a listen to it tomorrow. The chances are that they will either do the repair free of charge or charge a small amount. I hope they do it for free, cant afford another rebuild.
