    strange knocking

hi all i have a very strange knocking noise coming from the front end, from what i can hear its from the drivers front wheel assembly.
Whilst taking up drive it goes but when coasting or slowing down its knocking, ive swapped the shafts over (due to being on the wrong side) but still seems to knock.
Fitted new top mounts, wishbones, ball joints, track rod ends any ideas?

Sounds like you've covered most bases! It could be subframe mounts.

I know it won't be a popular suggestion, but my local Kwik-Fit has a pneumatic ramp where your car goes up on it and they press a button where it basically 'shakes' the whole car while you can stand underneath. This showed up a rounded hub>ball-joint knock that I couldn't for the life of me find with a pry-bar.

Does it sound like the knocking is per rotation of the wheel ? I.E does it knock faster the faster you are going or is it just a random suspension type knock.
If it is drive train related, increases and decreases with speed, it could be a CV joint or wheel bearing.

Yes, I had a strange knocking one when I was in Scotland, I had had a puncture and my spare was flat so went to the nearest garage and got a new tire, on the way home ~100 miles later a strange knocking started, two wheel bolts missing and other 3 loose
I would have gone back and brained them if I had not been 100 miles away.

its hard to say i opened the bonnet lay on the engine whilst the car was rolling its on and off knocking im now thinking its the wheel bearing but saying that there is no play in the wheel its real hard to explain

It sounds like you fu@ked a cv joint when you put the drive shafts on backwards.

Could be wrong (have been before)

I was thinking that too baz, but it does it with the wrong driveshaft in too, closer listening to it it sounds like its coming from the strut or projecting through the strut

Maybe you need to nip up the collar that holds the shock in?

I'll take a look at it tomorrow the sound is like the spring 'twanging', I don't understand why it goes when taking up drive I suppose it could be the pressure holding it back tho

                            Thanks for the suggestions
