  • can I put a b4 lockable rear diff into a b5 quattro

I have a '98 b5 avant quattro tdi with the 5 speed gearbox and afn engine. The rear subframe and diff arrangement looks almost identical to the s2 avant setup. It's taken me a full day to change the subframe which was cracked.

Can I put a lockable diff in there?
If so which one would have the correct ratios?
How would I make it work?
Would I need to change the driveshafts and in that case which ones would work?
    Any other input welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

What are the codes for the transmission and rear diff, like the CEP on this 93 100 avant tdi build tag:

    RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan
    94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant

b5 and s2 avant rear end is the same for subframe and diff mounts

I believe the diffs are different though

I'd guess that you could make it fit but the prop shaft may not be compatible.

THORSEN? That must be the Danish version of the TorSen (Torque-Sensing) rear diff?

My diff code from the build specification is "DAJ" indicating 35:9

The cost of the V8 Torsen LSD seems a bit high for this little experiment. How would it perform in a diesel daily driver?

A few photos, could anybody confirm similarities between this and the s2 item?

The S2/RS2 has a different ratio 37:9 iirc, however there was a 35:9 ratio used within the audi 80 range.

Could my existing diff be converted to locking by using some parts from an S2/RS2 diff?

Or could anybody advise which audi 80 quattro had a 35:9 ratio?

                            CQ, S2, 90q are 4.11, v6 b4 80 quattro is 3.89, might be the answer.

"MEGA GEAR RATIO THREAD" on motorgeek might point you in the right direction (just remember they had B4 90s (same as our B4 80s)

do not se the lock unit will fit this rear end, from the parts from audi 80/90/s2.. so the easiest will be the scrapyard audi v8 rear end part , torsen unit (88-93)
