    RS2 Transmission noise

    Hello everybody,

I have a question about RS2 Transmission. I am hearing whining noise when i am driving in first gear, as soon as I change to second or any other noise is gone. Am I having a problem or is this normal. I know that RS2 had issue with first gear and it was updated later by Audi in later build RS2's. My RS2 was built in 1994 and i do not have updated transmission.

Thanks in advance for all input

Could be either the pinion bearings or somebody has abused first gear with some nasty high rpm clutch drops and some of the first gear teeth have chipped (galled). Either way, it isn't going to self-heal. Prepare for a rebuild $$$ or a new (A6 2.7tt) transmission. Here is some reading for you:

        Same? No. Similar? Yes.

RS2s came with CRBs or CGRs.

A6 2.7tt (and/or B5 S4 2.7tt (more likely to have been abused)) came with DSYs or EDUs.

Read the part about the different 1st gears:

Thnx but that description is not quite right for my symptoms.. I don´t have the tic tic tic play card on bicycle sound..

Mine sounds more like u are driving on the reverse, sounds like straight cut gears on 1 gear I have the 6-speed rs2 tranny.

I have exactly the same noise in my RS2. Has been there, oil change didn´t cure it neither did RVS gearbox treatment. I´ll be driving it normally, maybe rebuild if it goes awful...

As I already stated in this relatively old post, my tranny needs overhaul. I have the CGR box and since I dont to that crazy 6000 RPM clutch drops I think that a best bet would be to rebuild what I have.

Now comes the issui, When I am lookinhg at ETKA for 1994 RS2 trany parts, only thing it schows are the parts for CRB Trany.

Can I just look for trany parts for S2 from 1994 for example and get the right parts? I am sceptical cause by reading some posts here on forum there are discussions that even the CGR trany on RS2 had some differences than CGR found on S2.

Can someone shed some light please.

                  Thanks in advance

The 01E original type 1st (mainshaft part) was # 01E 311 105 G, the wider 1st, not flexible of the CGR was ...105J, the flexible 1st was ..105E, and the flexible wide 1st of the CRB was ...105H. The only listed available mainshafts are 01E311105J (from a 1994 A80Q listing for the CGR but also CBD, CEL and CBL) and the 01E311105H of the CRB and the CMG (like the one in my 94 V8 S4 avant).

Nobody on this forum knows what exactly is inside a CGR on an RS2 or whether there are differences between and RS2 CGR or S2 CGR. In my opinion, a CGR is a CGR. However, even *IF* the factory started to install the 01E311105H in a CGR, it shows that parts of the 01E transmissions of the 1992-1997 period are potentially swappable.

Putting 01E311105H into one American Audi dealer's on-line parts sales website yields a price of US$995 for just the mainshaft. http://genuineaudiparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=214407

Putting 01E311105J into the same website yields a price of US$1023. http://genuineaudiparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=214407 No brainer. Go for the
                    01E311105H.

You'd be better to source a good used transmission if that is the price of a new mainshaft.

I had similar whine and low volume chattering in my box. Admittedly it was a 5spd from a 3b rather than the 6speed from RS2 but I had it rebuilt. Pinion bearing was the culprit along with some machining need on one of the gears. The gearbox guy (Central Axles in Birmingham) I took it to was surprised how knackered it was when he opened it up. I had to persuade him to take the car out a second time as he could not hear the noise first time but as an owner, you know when something is not right. Anyhow, he said that he would never have thought it was so knackered from the "slight" noise it was making. He said had the bearing let go (and it was close evidently) it would have done catastrophic damage.

So basically, do not ignore noises. Get it into a specialist and have it rebuilt. All 2nd hand boxes are probably gonna be jacked too, or on their way. My box was lush when it was rebuilt. The Audi boxes are agricultural at best but it was nice to have my tractor back working again so the turbo could be enjoyed once more.

                      Good luck with it.

I have a brand new 105j shaft if your interested. Your first gear on the shaft will be nackered and then they wine.

First off all I want to thank all for input. Lot of good info here. However it seems from some of your experiences here that I am better to get ready with some cash and open my tranny to see how bad it was damaged. I beleive that only than I can make a good decision if original transmission is worth rebuilding or do I need to get another one.

However one should not forgent, like already mentioned here, chances of finding a good used transmission are small

If you are going to keep the car and enjoy it long term, it makes sense to properly correct the issue, rather than buying into another problem with a used box. It is costly but fun aint cheap.
