    This should help

Wheel bearing page of the workshop manual

    82mm
    Hub out

    Bearing out

    Bearing in

    Hub in

That has the diagrams for pressing out the hub, bearing and refitting.

If you go back to the directory and follow through the rest of the info on removing etc is there in the sections.

You can just knock the hub out the bearing, with a hammer and a support, same for the bearing. Easier with a press.

I had to apply 8.5 tons of pressure to get one out so they can be stubborn! Use a press

I'd recommend if your unfamiliar with using a press, hand it over to someone that is, as they will have the knowledge where to support the hub. Like Error says last time I changed a bearing we had near 9ton on the bearing to remove it from the hub. Last thing you want to do is put the hub out of shape during the press out / in process.

Thanks chaps, I figured it was a double press operation, once for the hub then again for the bearing.

I will take it somewhere on saturday, that will hopefully be able to do it with the right size tools...

P.S. The hub is very loose to turn and sound horrible and raw, I think I have found the source of my rumble...

            Cheers,

Well I finally have the wheel bearing housing off, the hub is still pressed into the bearing, so will leave this for the garage to do. Now I just need to find a garage that can press the hub and bearing out and back in again without ****ing anything up! My normal garage is an hours drive away and I don't have time to go and see them...

just make sure that they support the new bearing properly when they press it in and when they press the hub back into it.
They need to support the outer race as they press the new one into the hub carrier and support the inner race as they press the hub into it

Makes sense if you are mechanically minded, but not if you are an idiot! I have read a good review of the garage and the boss/owner is doing it for me. He sounded like he knew the score... Will let you know on Monday...

It is a straight forward operation. As already stated you will need to support the inner race when pushing the hub carrier into the new bearing or you will pop it out and scrap a new bearing. Most Hi Q places will do it for a tenner in the hand.

I've had worrying noises on 2 seperate 80 quattro avants now on the rear driveshaft closest to the exhaust.

It's the inner cv. The grease in both cases was like tar, I'm assuming the heat from the exhaust dries it up over the years. Good clean up and regrease and all is as good as new.

All symptoms as you have described.

I am fairly convinced it is the bearing. Once I got it the driveshaft out and the wheel off, the bearing feels raw and nasty. There is no way it should feel like that....

                        Cheers,

When I rebuilt all of mine I wiped most of the old grease out with paper towels then scrubbed all the baked waxy old stuff off the races and bearings with thinners. Re-grease and reassemble, jobs a good 'un.

Don't wash them in the kitchen sink you'll get in trouble

I just used brake cleaner to brake down the tar like old grease. Good clean out and regrease with cv grease. Very worrying noise gone.

If you have the back end stripped down you'd be as well greasing the inner cv while your at it.
