Upgrade gearbox internals, how much would it cost

I have 6 speed gearbox box from a urS4. I am considering installing it into my B5 TDI but 5th an 6th gears are a bit shorter than they would be on an original diesel gearbox.

How much would the parts be?
Do I need special tools to change these cogs?
How much would the labour be if I go to a "specialist"

I know I'll need to change the rear diff to the correct final drive ratio.

custom gears are not cheap. why would you want to bother?

Good question. Basically being a dag dag it's comfortable at below 3000 rpm cruise. I want to cruise at higher speeds at lower revs.

surely a petrol box will be geared shorter as it ha a larger PRM range?

Yes it is and I want to gear it taller in 5th an 6th as I can't find a diesel 6 speed box in ireland.

I should have said my car has only got a 5 speed box at the moment which has a short 5th gear.

Hi Shane,

I may be breaking my 1995 A6 C4 2.5 tdi Avant soon. Would the 'box from that suit you?
A punter made me an offer for the vehicle lately, to take it away (the turbo's dead) and he has until the end of the month to come up with the readies.
Otherwise I'll put it out to the Forum members for parts.
