It's propper knackered now and so really needs replacing. Where might I find a replacement OE master cylinder and how do you bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Have contacted the VAG parts chaps already for a price. Any others?? I see that GSF have a few generic ones for around £45, will these fit the S2 (ABY) or no?

    Cheers

As Ant said when sober the ABY uses a special one. Its either VAG parts or dealer. Bleeding is done via the bleed valve on the slave cylinder on the top of the gearbox. You may find that you can get it to self bleed, but this is an artform in itself, i hve only ever done it once sucessfully

LMAO @ this thread and Ant

In all seriousness, the guys at Autopool have seen this fail before and it is relatively common according to them. One of Audi's not so good designs I think.....

          Cheers,

          Steve.

I wrote up a fix back in April. I used an adjustable cup off a bicycle bottom bracket bolted up to face the rubber join, it keeps it straight and so the force exerted by the clutch lever goes straight to the MS. PM me with your fax number and I can draw it for you ( its difficult to explain...) still going after several 000 miles............James

He's far too lucid for that.....

Haynes: to remove engine, undo all bolts and use engine crane.

Ant: undo bolts, turn car upside down and shake.

                LMAO!!!

Oops maybe 1 too many drinks the other night!

The GSF ones are fine for 3B etc but the ABY MC is specific to the ABY and costs lots more... sods law.

Bleeding is a bit fiddly as the bleed nipple on the Slave cylinder is obstructed by the gear linkage mountings, also need to make sure steering is fully to the right so thats not in the way also.

Doug posted some useful pics of this somewhere on here when he done his before.

IIRC VAGparts were about £50 cheaper than Main dealer for the master cylinder.

Changing it i would strongly recommend using a long allan key that has that spaded type head on one end so it can be used at any angle, makes the job much easier!
