    Strongest Shafts for S2

Hi chaps I have been searching of late for a solution to upgrading the rear coupe driveshafts after another forum member has recently broken two in same amount of weeks.

The problem has come using launch control.
The first breakage was the drivers side rear half shaft

This weeks breakage was the passenger rear CV

Now I have been informed there is a way to use the front shafts on the rear with some machining to hubs etc.

However I just wondered what all the drag strip boys are using to cure this problem.

If its a reoccurring issue I have been investigating the possibility of having Motorsport spec front and rear shafts manufactured however that will not cure the CV breaking....

The rear CV and splines are smaller, so using front shafts will certainly be stronger.
CV20v rear shafts are a larger diameter, not sure if they are stronger or not though - the inner CVs are different to S2 ones though 100mm not 108mm pcd so you'd need CV rear diff flanges (easy to find).
I've seen the rear hub carrier machined out to take an 82mm front bearing in order to fit RS2 hubs. Maybe you can use S2 avant or B5 quattro rear hubs and shafts with that combo? IMHO if you do that the hub really needs a strengthening ring pressing on as there is not much material left once its bored out to 82mm.

Www.cp-service.se has a rear end kit using "flexible" rear shafts and front cv joints.

Like I mentioned you need to use the front hubs in the rears, once this is done I can supply you with a set of custom steel shafts its not a cheap solution but you won't break any more.

They are £200 each and a few hours machining to the rear hub

20 odd years of abuse and then launch control comes along. Looks like a common sight recently.

Front hubs will become as rare as rear driveshafts!

Like has been posted its all a bit pointless going to the trouble of better shafts when you still have to use the small outer cv's which rip to bits. I thought the rear hubs had plenty of strength left in them after machining out for front wheel bearings. Its definatly the way to go.

Is you friend loading up the transmission before launch by getting the clutch to bite a little?

                              S2 avants has bigger rear CV´s ... so machining + S2 avant CV´s + flexible shafts?
