THAT wrong.... some older 240 did have the m40 tranny(4speed), but its in 75/76.... BUT 740 did have a m45 ( 4 speed) they are very different buildt... the m45 , 46, 47 does have commen 4tr part, but m46 are a el overdrive unit on( gearvendor),some turbcars did have this too, with higer oilprssure.the m47 have a 5th gear as overgear.... use the m47 after 85.. so its ok...
when the m45/46/47 goes bad its normally the 3 gears sprag and wheel that goes..

you DO have a m50 and 51 too.. for the older volvo 264 in 1975 -1977.. its a bmw / getrag tranny..
you do have a m400 and 410 for the old 164 with straight 6... 1969-1975

          Update:

I purchased a complete M90 from a 940 D24tic incl starter, prop and shifter setup for €150 which i thought was very reasonable here it is bolted to my 3B engine, ignore the angle
its suspended on crane and leaning on trolly jack but you get the idea.

Won't the ratios be wrong if its a diesel box?

Why don't you just make a bell housing plate and use the super strong and modern 350z gearbox rather than a super rare gearbox ?

the OLDER 240 did have the m40 box( before 1976)... the laterone did have the M45 ( 4tr) and the M46.. with el overdrive( P or J gearwendor)... and the M47 with mauell overdriv in the 5. gear....( M47 before 1985 are some "#@@%%.) the intrernale parts are commen in all trannys... and the 3.gear are the weak point.... then the came the M90 in some 740 tic and 940/960versons.... it some stronger......
