These O1E boxes have problems with the 1st to 2nd gear shift collar jamming. Seem to be various symptoms but include being stuck in 1st or 2nd gear.
That would need a gearbox strip down to sort out!

easiest thing to do is what I suggested to see if your shifter is still connected to the rest of the linkage and if that its still working as it should. That would show you if that its the 13mm at the bottom of the shifter thats an issue or if its further forward than that.

you may be lucky and just have the nut come off that holds on part of the linkage that does the majority of the work as if thats slipping that will do what its saying. It will be easy to see and hopefully something simple and cheap

Yeah I'm not panicking about it being expensive... yet. But it does feel like the sort of thing that'll be fairly inexpensive and fairly quick to sort out - once it's clear exactly what has happened

under the car you will find the linkage( spline) it MAY have gone bad( upon the gearbox, but under the car)....if not.. the gearbox are gone( sprag and shift mecanisne inside) i have a audi box with the sprag and syncringe are welded together...( fricsion welded) ive tryed with a BIG hammer to got thes part separeted, no chance.....

Thanks Where exactly can you see the linkage? It all looks comprehensively covered up under there!

Booked in to Chris Umpleby in Bradford next Wednesday - either an expensive rebuild ensues or I will need to find a replacement gearbox

Hope it is the linkage and not the box. Either way, as you say it is bound to be a pain to even look at on these cars.

I just give mine to an experienced mechanic and keep my fingers crossed. Worked so far but looking forward to a bill of thousands at some point. Gotta be worth it though.

Thanks but his thread says sold pending payment.

I've made some inquiries about gearboxes but ultimately I'm going to wait on the diagnosis next Wednesday. I know there's going to be a lot of labour involved in getting into the gearbox to see what's wrong but it doesn't seem likely that something catastrophic has happened

I think it's either going to be linkage or selector forks. Gonna be costly but at least the car isn't fecked!
