Sounds like an an adjustment issue on the linkage - BTDT. Not sure how your custom kit works mind you.

      Pretty basic to be fair.

You have x amount of cross gate and x amount of throw. You just adjust where you want them to start and end.

Seems the problem is with the box, Shifts perfectly when flying through the gears under power.

What about gearbox/engine mounts? Just a thought that it might effect it but knowing your build you'd have new mounts all round.

I shift using a cable set up because everything is alittle further rear wards on my S2, cables work perfectly.

          So Okay....

Lets try this another way around. Has any one ever broken or bent a selector fork on the 01E gear box causing a rough gear change?

Had a similar problem on my Miss Cabriolet.

Hard to shift in first and reverse when cold.

Id ended up that the doublemass flywheel was broken.

Try with the engine not running to go trough thsoe gears, if you get better then it'sthe flywheel

            Stefano

            P.S.
Then perhaps you have a singlemass and all the bove it's wrong....

Not the answer you looking for but normally first and reverse suggest clutch not doing its job Correctly.
Also if the fork was bent im sure you would struggle to get other gears as the other fork would not be sitting in the correct position ( the hub) to allow you to select another gear.

                  Yep

Thinking the only thing on paper now can be i have too little pivit point for the throw or i am hitting a angle on the joints which it can not handle.

                  Thanks for the input chaps

Not sure what you are using linkage wise these days mate, but it took me about 6 hours to set up my linkage with the spherical bearing (the one you did), there is no room for error with it at all

Can you select all gears without using the linkage?

My fork broke (one of the sides broke and the whole fork was bent), but I have a 5 speed 3B. I had half of the normal clutch travel (I don't know if you call it this way) and gears were very difficult to select. The clutch would also engage very soon, just when you started to release the clutch pedal, and it would go much worse when getting the engine warmer. It was really very unconfourtable to drive.
I guess that with a 6 speed gearbox it would happen more or less the same, but I guess that your setup is pretty different from the normal one.
                          I hope this helps.
                          Cheers.

My first gear is really difficult to engage when cold, fine when warmed up, I seem to remember reading that this is a gearbox problem. Particularly bad if i pull away cold, change to second then try to get back into first at the end of the road.
