Just looked up the RS2, that doesnt list the nipple. So I guess this was removed from the propshaft on the RS2. The ABY and RS2 props also have different part numbers.

Could be alsorts of things. Its impossible to tell without hearing it, or eliminating items. Take it to another garage any see if they can come up with the goods. Where have you been taking it??
Local specialist (exhaust, propshaft) and main stealer (gearbox, cats). Not many other local options.
I will discuss 'how can it be propshaft if happens when stationary' I will insist on being there next time but the main man has spent some time on the car and knows the noise.
Thanks for ideas Tom
Im pretty certain its the centre mount on mine which is shot.
Coasting in gear off the throttle its quite loud now, same in all gears. rattling noise from behind the handbrake area, on the power and it is gone.
Ive removed the large heatshield and there is movement in the joint to the left and right. Think the outer race of the bearing which is pressed on the splines of the prop is touching the housing of the mount.
I have the BMW part 26 11 1 206 502 that porkkis mentions. £15 from GSF.
But the centre joint in the prop needs seperating to get the bearing off. Was gonna get a better look at it at gregs garage. theres a good explanation on 20v.org site http://www.20v.org/drvshaft.htm#driveshaft
But i think your problem lies elsewhere alastair if it is happening when stationary.
If you feather the throttle around 3-4000rpm you get a metallic scraping noise as if metal is rubbing metal. Hence exhaust seemed likely culprit to begin with. You get it driving (2nd gear same rev range amplfied by feathering throttle) or stationary.
I believe something is moving against something else but heatshields etc have been checked.
This may be one for the garage meet. Do you want to add me to the ramp list ??
And again. Having talked at length to the head mechanic the noise can be heard when on ramp and is stopped by applying pressure to propshaft. Explaination is the CV/bearings worn and allowing resonance along propshaft at certain revs
Agreed but at least I got a better understanding of the problem by discussing it here and going back and asking questions. Its in his interests as so far he has put on an OEM exhaust at his expense to 'solve' the noise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks all again

It is tight then! I mean the splitting of the prop isn't an easy job. Get yourself prepared with a LARGE hammer and some help...
Löbro (OEM) CV-joint = 301142 = Ford 149 3963 = Ford 72 GG 4635 BA = Porsche 923 332 032 00
Febi Bilstein center mount/bearing = 05196 = BMW 26 11 1 206 502 = BMW 26 12 1 104 355
Center joint can be found by measurements as an universal item.
Don't know if this is any help but I've just been digging around on the family albums big brother and found the propshaft adjustment info.
If complaints are received (noises, vibrations), it is essential to check whether correct adjustment of the propshaft rectifies the fault before replacing the propshaft.
Cheers Ben, thats really interesting...any idea where we can get our hands on the tool btw....? I definately get a done....i wonder whether now it needs to be checked to ensure the shims are correct too.
Well, technically you would have to buy it through ERWIN and it would probably cost a small fortune but I'm sure a friendly main stealer parts man can get one
I'm off to wales for a week this afternoon but when I get back I'll see how much they are and accidentally order one. "Honestly, I pressed the wrong button, but since it's here there's no point sending it back."

Ben ! ! Can we get some clones of you and install a version in all the stealers around the uk??
We only have one stealership in the whole of the North East area that knows what an S2/RS2 is
