  • S6 flywheel and gearbox advice

As well as my running issue that some of you guys know about, my car has a much simpler problem! First gear on my 6 speed box is absolutely screaming it's nuts off! Add to that a noisey release bearing and jangley flywheel I'm going to make a job out of it!
I've tried to read up on different boxes on here and I'm a little confused. In real world experience, which is the best box to get for my car? Is it more cost effective to sort mine out or should I just go buy a better one? Also, has mine already got the wide first gear? It's a '95.
Also, flywheels. Which single mass conversion is the one to have? 3b or 034's lightweight? And for upto RS2 level, which clutch would you suggest?

Nor sure of some of this answer, but others will correct it for both of us.

I am assuming road car rather than track car.

    DSY box from a B5 RS4.

EDU box from an All Road.

Whatever box you settle on ideally wide first gear, and flexible shaft.

An RS2 box with the above would be fine if you can find one. ( Code = CGB ??? )

    ANN Flywheel for "normalness."

Sachs clutch one step above standard, to be slightly stronger and still nice and light for stop start traffic.

    But see what others think.

Looks like the desirable box is like hens teeth! I've found a good 6 speed box from an S2 and because Tgats available to me sooner rather than later I'm going for that. Mine really is on its last legs now so I'll pop the S2 box in and if RS2 spec pops up later I can always swap again.

Flywheel wise. Mine is really really poorly now too. But a genuine dual mass is silly money (£1,000 upwards last time I rang TPS!!) and I don't fancy a second hand one so don't know what to do there!

A 3b flywheel is solid, so doesn't fall apart. You can also get a 7A flywheel and get it lightened so it is the same as a 3B. Use a clutch for a 3B, SRE if you want it to be future proof.

Dual mass flywheel is smoother, but I have never had issues with traditional solid flywheels.

Lightened flywheels are a personal thing for street use.

You can have the strong first gear fitted to a normal 6 speed IIRC. It's actually more to do with the shaft of the gear being flexible than with the width of the gear?

I'll look into that once it's in as then I'll have a 'spare' 6 speed box lying around. It's getting urgent to get it sorted at the minute. I've found a quiet flywheel too as I'm having better luck finding a unicorn than a 3b flywheel and my DM sounds absolutely dreadful at idle now, knocking and jingling like a musical instrument.
Part of the Rush is also that if anyone looks at the car for its now famous running fault they always pick up on the other faults the car has (mainly transmission noises, you'd have to hear my 1st gear to believe it!) and almost write the car of as 'just knackered'

Theres a place near me in leeds that makes clutches for any car quoted me 750 to make a clutch for me when i said i was thinking about going 550 brake also my forst gear has started whining so i spoke to a gearbox specialist i know amd he said first gears on our boxs are fixed onto the input shaft and when u launch the car it bites into the shaft causing a noise althpugh the first gear should be fine ... with constant abuse could cause a tooth to snap BUT it should be okay long as constant abuse isnt given ( if thats even possible to do haha)

Yeh. The noise is just pissing me off more than anything.

Not really, having wide first gear would mean changing out the middle casing of the gearbox and main shaft+coresponding gear. Though getting a spare box from later car with known syncro issue and then mix&match the best bits to the new box could be cheap* alternative to sourcing a good box. Sourcing strong 01E box should not be that difficult, they were used all the way til B6 platform, after 96 or 97 they all should have flexible main shaft with wide first gear.

So what box would you recommend getting put into a coupe s2 to make it lets say more able to launch off first without damaging first gear?

RS2 spec if you can find one! But I'd imagine if you do it'll be costly. Personally, mine couldn't afford to wait much longer so I settled for a quiet S2 box which arent as rare so if it eats itself again I can have another stab at finding an RS box
