  • b2 diff conversion to torsendiff

    hi guys
a little thread of my diff conversion
i bought a spare diff from a b2 coupe quattro with code AEC and a torsendiff from a audi 200 v8 (3.6) with code AXZ
first I disassembled the torsendiff and than the other
afterwords i checked the difference between the two
the distance of the bearings and the crown wheel is the same (both 37 teeth)
also the right diff cover is the same
    it's a direct swap
you must also place both v8 flanges because they are longer than from the normal diff
i placed the locking handle back to fill the gaps in the diffhousing
now i only need to order some new seals for the v8 flanges and clean the outside a little bit
    that's it for now
i post later the final result

warning; the cron and pinion are sold as a pair; so you cant use the cronwheel from one diff, and pinion form another.... you need to use the cronwheel from the org diff.. and use ONLY the thorsen unit... IM NOT KIDDEN...!
the ratio and the teeth will match, but they are not absolutt like ...

You might have different thickens of shims behind the outer bearing race if you have changed the cover from V8. There should not be big difference.

You can swap the crown wheel over quite easily, just undo all the bolts a couple of turns, and hit them evenly to knock it off, you might need to thread in longer bolts, I cant remember.

Heat the crown wheel in the oven, 200c for 20 minutes worked perfect for me, it just drops straight on.

Then re assemble and check for lash/bearing preload.

If you have two a bit longer m10x1 bolts you can use them to pull crown wheel in place. It is not tight fit.

So will the diff lock work at all once you changed the diff inside your orig housing?

no,i removed the gear.the torsendiff is a little bit different on the locking side if you see on the picture with both diff's,the torsendiff have no tooth
maybe it's possible to machine tooth on it but then there is an other problem because the flange on the locking side from the origional diff is to short for the torsendiff and you need a flange with tooth on if you want a torsendiff with permanent locking

Ahh I see. I'll have to look at the pics on my computer vs my phone for the detail.

I have cleaned up the diff ,put some new seals in and place a new black powerflex bush in the rear diff mount.
                          ready to install

                            little update
I placed the differential but had a few problems
the flanges from the torsendiff measure 108mm and the origional flanges from the car measure 100 mm so my driveshafts dont fit
I went to a local junkyard and bought there two driveshafts from the front axle of a old Audi 100 type44)
one driveshaft had a correct length for the right side
for the left side, I shortened the shaft
due to the larger drive flanges the exhaust came against the right flange so it was necessary to adapt the exhaust
because the love for my car is big enough I do not care for all that work
