    gearbox shifter bush

After replacing my gear stick lower joint & socket, I'm still not entirely happy with the shift on my 6 speed and there still seems to be play in the linkage somewhere. My thought was that its the plastic bush at the end of the linkage that's to blame for the sloppiness. After reading through some older posts, I found the original part number for the bush is 8A0 711 189. So now I think I have two choices, replace the plastic bush with one of these:

(although I don't know if this actually IS the correct bit)

    or, one of these:

I've heard that the 034 stuff can be tricky to install and adjust correctly so replacing the bush with a standard one may be best?
Anybody tried the 034 kit as above and can comment on installation or can confirm I'm looking at the correct bush? The bush isn't terribly expensive but I don't want to waste 20 odd quid if I can help it...and don't want to buy the 034 kit if its going to take a day's labour to install...

    Any input always appreciated chaps

    cheers,

    mike

That p/n is the ball on the end of the arm not the bush - unfortunately there is no replacement bush available for the OEM linkage.

I had a similar spherical joint in my old 01E linkage - it was great however it took me the best part of a day tweaking the bends on the linkage arm to make it work properly so I could select all gears smoothly. Unlike the OEM joint there is zero compensation for even the slightest inaccuracy in the shape of the linkage. So I would be skeptical it will work without modifying the shape of the linkage.
The second thing I notice is that mine needed an undercut on the mounting bushes (pic below) to give the joint enough range of movement to select all gears and even then there was zero margin for error - I can't envisage the 034 one will even allow you enough to select all gears.

Hi Alex, thanks for the good info. I did wonder if I could just replace the affected bits or not so I guess the answer's no
That was the thing about the 034 bush, if it was easy enough to fit then I'd go for that but spending a whole day d!cking around with it just doesn't sound appealing. I might just have to save up for a new audi linkage in the future...b@lls!

        cheers again,
        mike

I don't know what the oem bush looks like, but would this be a job for Albert ?

As if he hasn't enough to be doing.
