Öh? How are you going to turn a standard rear open diff into a Torsen differential? You mean switched to a Torsen?

Turned/switched into a torsen, this is semantics. It can be done, and we will do it.

Henka - take a look at the transmission section on S2central.net in the technical chapter. There's an explanation of the various diff types.

The standard (open) front & rear diff casings can accommodate Torsen or Quaife-ATB type differentials. I hope this is something that MRC make considerable attempts to productise such conversions.

i've said it before, and i'll say it again...hehehe...the torsen from the Audi V8 can be placed within the casing of the B4/5 casings...i've seen it on a couple cars in person. I know that you know Mihnea, but everyone else doubts...

Yes I know. You can switch to a V8 Torsen. Look in the post. I've written alot of questions and answers under that thread. It just caught my eye that Mihnea here was saying you could turn an open diff into a Torsen

I just wanted to know what he meant. As I said, I knew you could "switch to", not that you could "turn into".

Yeah... Those things have been around for ages. The GOOD thing about them is that you add 2 more spider gears in the differential bringing the loads on the gears down as one wheel i spinning and one is standing still. Now, this one seems to be a combination of that AND a Gene Breg Poor Man's Posi Traction (anyone know Gene Berg? If not guess you're not into VW Beetles then!). Basically what you do is shim the play between the spider gears in the diff so that the backlash in them is veeery close to zero. The added friction in the gears now mean that as power is loaded on in the diff it is easier to spin both wheels than one - and the extent to which this happens is, as I said, adjustable by shimming. Basically what you end up with is a diff that is still open but beefed up (4 spiders instead of 2) with some possibility of lsd-function - in my mind it can't be all that much though.
