      I have just seen it. The caliper backplate attachment plate for the handbrake has corroded to the point that the attachment plate has disintegrated.
      Vagparts to the rescue !

        Have you got any pics Alastair ? If it's the part I'm thinking of I think you have to buy a complete backplate...

          It is and I have ! Vagparts £47 + vat Audi stealer £81 + vat No brainer. Thankyou again boys. Doing both sides ouch
          Will dovetail with bonnet, new door trims paint and fit so no car for 2 weeks
          Will have to convince wife that I can handle the punto in the meantime !

            Was it these bits ? Mine were corroded too & floating about inside the handbrake drums but following advise from Kim Collins @ QST my mechanic left mine off. Handbrake works OK without them.

                  Yes they are used as a wear plate rather than push against the carryer each time you put the hand brake on
