ok nearly ready for my 5 to 6 speed conversion,

the 6speed box i have does not have the aluminium arms which bolt on the the sub frame gear box bushes, these are 72.58+value added thieft

i was wondering if i could use the ones off my 5 speed?

5 speed mounts don't fit 6 speed casings.

Buying the expensive 'correct ones' won't solve your problem either, as they won't fit your subframe.

Get custom ones made, I did, cost me £45 for the pair.

I used stiff cardboard, bent to the right dimensions / shape, then had it made from steel - much stronger than the originals!

right, got my 5 speed gear box on the floor next to my 6 speed, the 5speed is 25mm shorter than the 6, is there enough travel in the propshaft to acomadate this or do i need to "introduce it to my little friend" and chop an inch out

this is a pain in the **** if i do cause then i have to pay to get it balanced etc

AFAIK you need a shorter prop. Typ85q or of course coupe aby prop is a straight fit.

Wab, I'm going to be doing this myself in the near future so I've been trying to gather some info. Apparently the ABY mounts fit the 3b SF with the use of a spacer of some sort. (You have an RS2 SF anyway so no probs there) I have yet to get details of this spacer..

Also, it seems, some folk here have done the conversion by just pushing the propshaft in on its sliding joint as far as it will go, the box will then fit, however, I'm not sure that this allows for any rearward movement of the engine under accelleration, the sliding joint is there for a purpose..

You can fit an ABY shaft but then need the flywheel and spacer.. (think this is true)

I've heard that use of one half of the Avant shaft will effectively shorten the total of the 3B shaft, not sure which half though Must be the front half. We would need to do some measuring of all the parts of the ABY Coupe, 3B and Avant Shafts to find out what is going on, and I have no way of doing that.. Is there such a thing as a 3B Avant? That would make four different prop shafts.

Thats a load of help then eh?

ok well looks like it needs to be shorter, not a big problem as it will fit in the lathe

has anyone shortened a prop before?

i was going to chop half an inch out, then turn a shoulder half an inch long the same ID as the prop to knock in the end - clock it up and weld it on

this IMO would make a strong - true joint

                  any com / crits welcome

                  regards

It does need to be shorter IMO,
I will be doing all this at some point so ive got an aby prop, you can get around the aby spacer problem by moving the engine back on its mounts (there are slots in the engine mounts to allow this) Mark H has done this i believe when using 3b flywheel on his aby. Sal may have one or four rings scrappers in doncaster.
I got quite lucky with finding all the parts, linkages etc. just need to source a 6sp g/box.

I'll be fitting my DSY 6-speed soon and have been collecting parts for the job. I have a B4 subframe (same as RS2), 4000 rear driveshaft which should be bolt in at the correct length, RS2 linkage, shifter, and mounting brackets (still looking for the linkage, shifter and mounting brackets if anyone has a lead) Also since my car was a 91 Coupe I have the front halfshafts from the S2 since the 6-speed has different flanges than the stock 5-speed. This should be all you need.

                        you sure flanges are different?

                        thought they were the same,

108mm vs 100mm. And since the 6p box is slightly wider, half shafts are different length also. The outer CVs are the same. So you need the half shafts and inner CVs from ABY.

Its the 7A's which have smaller diameter flanges (100mm) all S2's are the same 108mm. Dunno about shorter driveshafts on the 6 speed though.
