  • ANother Question About Tyre Size For 17" Wheels

At least one of the tyres on the car is showing its age. Loads of tread but slightly persished and when pushed they are starting to slide in the wet as the compound has gone hard.

The wheels are the standard 17" Avus with Michelin 205 x 55 x 17 tyres. Questions as follows:

    1. What is the biggest tyre in terms of width that I can go to? I've searched the forum and some people say 235 x 45 x 17 is a good option.

    2. What do people prefer and where do you shop?

The 8 x 17 ET 35, is that the same as the standard wheels?

Need the width or j number to know how wide you can go my 17x7j had 225 width tyres on and I'm sure that's the widest on that j number

As for brand of tyre I've given up on the silly prices of Continental, Michelin etc and now swear by Uniroyal rainsports, great tyres at a great price

That’s what I was after, so it’s 205’s then or a different set of wheels.

I ended up with 245 on 7.5j at one point because of the RS2 tyre size confusion looked nice but swapped them back when they wore out as didnt want to come unstuck with insurance if anything happened

It's rolling radius you want to keep the same. Starting with the base of 205/65/16 which was S2 standard fit, that leads to 245/50/17 for 17 inch rims and 245/45/18 for 18 inch rims.

I favour Goodyears if they are available in either Eagle Asymmetric 6 or ultra performance. FA running on 245/40/17 is a bit out on rolling radius but 245/45/17 is a closer match on rolling radius and available in Asymmetric 6 so that's where I'd go.

As for where, I just shop the internet, usually Camskill or Black Circles and fit them myself but the last set came from Asda Tyres including fitment at a local tyre place for the best price.

S2 standard is 205 55 16 which is the same pretty much as 245 40 17 if on an 8j
Another option on the standard avus alloys was 225 50 16

I want to keep the car standard so if it was an option then I think it will be the 225’s.

This is what I run on my standard wheels, they look right.
