I've never heard of these rims as a 'factory fitted option' but it may have been something done by UK dealers... to help promote local sales.
Anyway, regardless of that, the larger the offset (ET) the further inboard the wheel is moved.
An ET of 45mm with an 8" rim sounds dodgy to me for the S2 - that must indeed be a very marginal fit on a Coupe or Avant. So much so that some tyres are OK and some tyres aren't. Obviously to keep wider wheels inside the wheel arches, a larger offset is needed, but like I say ET45 seems marginal in my opinion.
The steel wheel you mention with a 5x112 pattern and ET45 is almost certainly no more than 6" wide - so you wouldn't have the same clearance problems.
