Newbie here with a load of questions!

Hi all, the name's Dave and I'm currently playing with an idea concerning an S2 coupe.
The other half and I are currently into the Drift scene and own a couple of Jap imports (Mine is an '85 AE86 Toyota, her's is an R33 Skyline).

I'm selling mine to settle a few bills and then hopefully that'll pave the way for an S2.
I might upset a few hardcore Quattro fans with my idea's for the S2 but I don't care, lol!

I plan the bin the 4WD and make it RWD, anyone done this or know of anyone that's done it? I thinnk it would make a very good drift car with the right mods. Also what sort of bits and bobs would I need to get between 350-400bhp? And any tricks to get 'free power' from these motors, I'm guessing my idea of making it RWD would free up some transmission losses in power.

So once again, hello all, and hope to hear from anyone concerning my idea

Why on earth would you start with a 4WD chassis just so as to downgrade it into RWD format for drifting ? Each to their own I suppose, but I think your approach is a bit odd - the geometry of the Audi Coupe is setup for FWD or 4WD.

Sure you'll have lower transmission loss with RWD, but you'll also have lots less traction - I don't have much truck with the drifting scene myself. I prefer to see cars go round the track as quickly as possible... not as sideways as possible - though I do respect the skill it takes to control slides/drifts like that corner after corner. I imagine its more fun to do, than it is to watch.

I guess I'd be more interested if you wanted to take an S2, keep it 4WD and do something radical with quattro transmission to make it better suited to drift stylee driving. Trick diffs are available to give you LSD at the front, a rear centric bias in the centre diff and you can have an LSD at the rear - or just lock the normal open diff if you like. That and you can make the car very much stiffer with some ARB tricks (and harder springs)

You would need a big flat torque profile to get thing anyway driveable in drift mode... I dunno if turbo engines are suited for that reason... Maybe a V8 non turbo is the way to go.

Getting power to the levels you require is easy bolt on stuff - but it aint free - search the forum for RS2 upgrades - if you want monster torque (above 550Nm) from the motor (assuming that 2WD can handle it) then you need a big-end upgrade as well.

I still think you are on the wrong page with the concept. Lets say you hit 400bhp - that is 200bhp per driven wheel. The phookin reason that Audi invented quattro was to prove its superior traction in all kinds of conditions... But hey if drifting is your thing then speed and traction aren't important (contraversial).

Just seems like a waste of a quattro really. Sorry - I've tried to be helpful here with some ideas if you are insistent, but I think your approach is fundamentally flawed !

Just get a big turbo and some nice cams and cut the blue wire and you can drift all day. I can do drift with my car and it's a 500 (AWHP) avant .

That sort of power isn't going to be cheap, in fact it is possibly prohibitively expensive, especially as the car will then have to be modded to make it RWD

Don't forget, even if they don't look like it, S2s are extremely heavy for their size, this may have an impact on your ideas. Its easy to rip out the front drive shafts to turn it to RWD, but it will handle like a pig and I doubt you will get the control you require for drifting.

A better choice would be a porsche 928 or 944, cheap now, modable and RWD!

        TVR?

If you fancy something a little out of the ordinary, with tons of torque, rear drive and turbo then I would go for a, wait for it, you won't like it, but a Volvo 240 turbo!

Don't think just disconnecting/removing front driveshafts will work. The torsen centre diff will have a very hard time with that.

guys the bloke is after advice not a lesson on 4wd v's 2wd. gotta say you are kind of walking into it though.

in the world of drift 2wd rules really. its not on its way out, probly the opposite. look at this years gatebil.

4wd drifting is cool, 2wd is sensible and far more practical. i think the world of drift has seen every possible jap car concoction and a breath of fresh air can win things.

id look into trying to graft a volvo or nissan 2wd system to the audi engine. get an old 4 cyl block (same bolt positions really 10 a penny) and start fabricating. the audi tends to drift with the front end first.

350hp is no worries on the engine. big turbo will give the cred but maybe not the delivery you want. maybe a kkk hotside gt3071 is the answer.

I'm sure that loads of people on here don't care what you do to your S2 if you get it, it will be your car after all. Its just that I think most people on here feel it'll be the wrong car for what you want.
Ignore the nay sayers but listen carefully to those who appear to know what they are talking about.
Don't forget, these cars are now an investment aswell as a mode of transport.
If you are still going ahead with it, drop me a PM with your budget, I may be able to help you out!

Nice to hear both 'for' and 'against' sides of the story. Gazzag60 hit the nail on the head with the jap connection. There's a couple of BMW's making their way into the drift comp's.
I never knew the S2's were so front biased, what percentage of the drive goes where?
Also a couple of Subaru's have been converted for RWD and a couple of Evo 9's. They also had the centre diff locked/welded and a 2 way diff at the rear.

Not really fussed about the weight of the car as it will most likely be stripped of most of the creature comforts and a cage put in. Also I'm not interested in the car as an investment otherwise I'd never have dreamt of doing this to a car.
I used to be heavily into the whole VAG scene a few years back, had a selection of Golfs in MK1 2.0 16v flavour, MK2 2,0 16v, also a MK3 colour concept GTI. Wanted an S2 back then, but then we stumbled across a nice Skyline for sale (not the gtr but a RWD GTST)
I knew I'd upset a few people with my plans but I hope to break the Jap dominated drift competitions and from my VAG past I know this German muscle is very well put together and can take some punishment (dahlback racing anyone!)

I will listen to all sides, call me what you want (water off a ducks back and all that) but I think this is an interesting project to undertake.

Also the current EDC (european drift championship) doesn't allow 4WD cars to compete.

                      Cheers peeps, Dave

The flavour of 4WD used in quattro like the S2 is essentially a FWD system that has an additional diff (in the centre) to distribute torque to the rear. Nominally it works on a 50:50 split but depending in conditions it can swing to 70:30 either way... It transfers torque to the wheels that GRIP, not the wheels that slip !

Old quattro boxes had a lockable centre diff for fixed 50:50 split - the WRC cars ran like that with a special box that was just locked in the centre. The Torsen centre on the S2 is not lockable unless you want to trash one with a welder.

SO you can lock the centre and hijack the control circuit on the reardiff to lock it as well. That is gonna give you a lot of rear bias, but I have no idea what its gonna be like to drive - probably dangerous on the public roads but has potential for the drift thang.

Like all things, you could get a gearbox whizz to remove the centre diff altogether and direct all the torque to the rear if RWD is a must have - there is an Audi based kit car around with mid engine and 2WD gearbox that is oriented to drive the rear axle, but I doubt thats the sorta thing you wanna be drifting in - I dunno.

If I was you, I'd go for a Porsche 928 or 944 - right configuration for engine and chassis for what you wanna do - and it tastes of bratworst - not rice

The Volvo option could work too - bit dull to look at mind you, but you'd get noticed if you were able to win things in an old Volvo.

Thanks for the advice S2central, believe it or not there and quite a few old volvo's doing the rounds at club level drifting. They've manged to drop in 16v motors from the clio williams too, very entertaining I can tell you!

So it is do-able by locking the centre diff, or I guess getting a new prop made up and remove the centre diff altogether!

Does anyone have a highres piccy of the underside of an S2 by any chance they could post?
