I'm curious to how it was imported in the United States.

Motor vehicles not more than 25 years old must conform to the Department of Transportation (DOT) motor vehicle safety standards that were in effect when these vehicles were manufactured. Passenger cars manufactured after September 1, 1973 must also meet bumper standards.
I'm quite interested in the importer took the time to bring it up to DOT standards? Including thicker windows, bars in the doors, bumpers, emissions, etc etc

Well, the guy that i bought the car from is in the military and i could ask him if he was stationed in Germany. If he was, then this is how he must have gotten the car here.

If you really do have an S2 it may be the only one in the US.
I was told that this car was one of 900 in the U.S.

Funny, I'm in the military, and if I'm thinking he's brought it over the way I'm thinking... :mischeif:

And I can't possibly believe it's 1 of 900 in the USA. I've heard of the Audi S3 that someone brought back with to the USA (as they were never offered there), unfortunately was written off in an accident. Anyway if you can find any more details about how he did it (and what base he was from and roughly when he did it) I can ask around.

Hell I may be able to bring one back then

That MUST be a conversion car - unless this military guy has pulled off a fantastic feat of red-tape avoidance when importing the car and registering it somewhere.

We need photos of that car to determine if its the real McCoy or not. Maybe Uncle Sam relaxed the rules recently.

The S2 was NEVER imported to the US market - in any shape or form. It was not type approved and crash tested etc etc unlike the 20VCQ which did get there of course. If you wish to import an S2 to the USA you would need to get pass whatever federal tests apply to imports. I did once read somewhere that in Canada they had introduced a rule to make it much easier to import cars older than something like 15 yrs.

An ordinary K26 will never get to 400bhp.

If 400bhp *really* is the goal here then a GT3071R is your friend. Add an RS2 EM, IM and Green injectors to the list along with forged motorsport spec rods and get some new RS2 bearing shells installed.

A good Motronic tuner can set that up for you on the 3B ECU, but that might not be an option for you in the US. You probably need to get into the dark world of aftermarket ECUs - VEMS, MOTEC or Emerald will work on 3B - or 034 of course which is likely your best stateside option for parts & support.

              Good luck,

Search the forum on this before you attempt anything radical - the heads are precious.

Very little room for bigger valves - and not much gain from them IMO. A good port job is valuable, but you need to know where to not remove too much material.

Just polish up the exhaust side - do NOT go for perfectly smooth inlet ports as the chances of fuel condensation are higher.

A good turbo, the right camshafts and fuelling and good ECU programming are all you really need worry about.

The car can legally be in the United States for up to 1 year before having to register with the US, and be driven with a driver's license (and valid passport IIRC) from the country the car was registered in. He might have just brought it and never registered it yet.

Also I pointed out in the United States
Motor vehicles not more than 25 years old must conform to the Department of Transportation (DOT) motor vehicle safety standards that were in effect when these vehicles were manufactured. Passenger cars manufactured after September 1, 1973 must also meet bumper standards.
Or, he could have brought it back via the "show and display" law passed in 1999. How do you think Bill Gates imported his Porsche 959?

It would be easier to prove that the car has significant and special value as it was never offered in the United States. Perfectly legal, all he has to do is sort his emissions. Gets the military to ship it (for free I might add), have the car in storage until the paperwork is filled out, get the emissions done, and there you go, an s2 in the states.

Mind you just playing devil's advocate here, I'm just showing you how it would be possible to import an S2. That's why I said I'm curious to see if this is actually real and how he's done it. Sh*t the military is small, if I found out the year and base he was at, I could probably find out who it was, as it's not a common day occurence

                          Welcome.

I want to add that from what I've read, S2 Coupe production started in 1990 but there never was a '90 model of it. My guess is CQ with 3b conversion.
                          S2 sold.

I can tell from that lil photo that this car is NOT an S2.

                                Wrong bumper/fender
                                Wrong wheels
                                Wrong bonnet/hood

Unless the guy changed the S2 parts to 20VCQ items
