HELP! I've just bought an S2!

hello everybody! I've just bought a 1992 Audi S2 with 96k on the clock and its really clean, however It has a couple of problems and I really need some advice, problem number 1 is a knock from the back of the car when changing gear, letting off and sometimes when pulling away

2, my speedo sticks, I've read that the paint on the dial peels and mine does look pretty bad but can these be replaced and where can I get info on doing it?

3, I get to 5 and half thousand revs then change, get to 5 and a half again then let off to slow down and the engine stalls then shows the fuel warning sign, I was told when I bought the car it has a very small fuel leak in the line so could it be sucking in air bubbles and again where can I get info on how to renew and where to buy from?

4, when almost getting to full lock left there is a rubbing noise, sort of like a door hinge creaking?

5, I bought the car for 1800 so was this a good price considering the problems that I have?

I've loved audis for years and my dream was to own a ur quattro or an S2 second choice and even though I've got problems I could'nt be any happier!

    Welcome

Take the clocks out and clean behind the needle with a sharp knife that should get you started mine used to stick at 100
Had dodgy fuel lines before but never had the fuel warning come on? What's your gauge say? Plenty fuel? With the fuel pressure you should see a leak quite quickly
As for the noise when turning could be CV joints.
    Get some photos up

    Cheers

      Welcome Barber,

Good price IMHO which allows you entry to S2 ownership.

Be prepared to spend a bit though with these faults, and possibly on other things that may arise, but theses cars are addictive so you should be OK if your wallet can stand an occasional assault.

But at least you wouldn't suffering any depreciation compared to a much new car.

All answers and help should be on here. Read the threads of other new members to see the info passed on to them as it will apply to you / your car also.

No doubt others will suggest possible causes/cures for the faults listed. ( # 4 does sound like it may be a a CV joint - presumably outer ? ).

      Any photos?

      Kind regards.

        Good work!

Noise at the rear will be diff bush. Replace all 3 bushes for about £100.

Fuel problem sounds strange, best spend some time on that one. Get the lines replaced and possibly a replacement pump and pressure reg.

        Good luck with it all!

As Rusty says, diff bushes are an easy one to sort out

Creaking on lock could be low PS fluid or air in the hydraulic system - IMHO its worth flushing the PS system out and putting new fluid in, you never know what other people before have put in (wrong fluid destroys seals) and things can get expensive / troublesome to sort out.

I've had a look underneath and can see oil coming from the left side of the rear diff, not dripping but its wet so I need an oil seal dont I? can you change these with the diff in place or should I just take the diff off?, I'm thinking of taking it to audi for them to inspect everything and give me a list of problems and what needs replacing? cheers everybody!

nice car. Warm welcome to the forum. I love the colour of your car and it was a steal for what you paid with the rs2 front bumper. Shame i was 20 mins late on getting that one on ebay last thursday.

You won't get much luck at Audi, find yourself a specialist who actually knows these cars.

He certainly didn't do himself any favours there... but you got yourself a steal. Welcome, and I'm sure if you want to swap the RS2 bumper there's be 1,000 people on here that'll offer it to you with a few hundred notes to temp the deal

Find yourself a local specialist, there's plenty of recommendations here on the forum, forget Audi you'll end up spending a fortune and probably come out with more problems then it went in with - they just don't know their classic cars...

                        Cheers

                          Barber,

They're right, Audi Dealer will not serve you well, they are expensive and are not familiar with old Audis.

You will need to find a local to you specialist, if you can't do the work yourself.

HTH, even though it will cause you grief to find a decent one.

Someone on here might be able to recommend a suitable specialist.

                          Kind regards.
