Thats how its supposed to work. When you lock the diff the rear axle behaves as a single simple axle, when you turn a bend one wheel has to turn faster than the other, with the diff lock on this results in a judder.

Cheers for the reply eric .When I drive in a straight line it feels a bit gutless you have to give it loads of gas and still a bit juddery.when driving in a straight line should it perform as normal ?

With the diff lock on, in a straight line the car should run the same. If the car runs fine with the diff lock off, then you might have a vacuum leak, the diff lock is actuated by vacuum, and maybe when you engage it, it introduces a leak into the system.
It might be something like this pic:

As above diff lock sounds as if its working fine.

I think it's a ten I'm clueless when it comes to engines but am willing to learn I know it a 2.2 non turbo on a g plate .I only got it last week I'm looking to get it insured today .I am also wanting to find a good auto electrician in and around the Cumbria area who knows these cars and won't spent three hours scratching his head !!

Well that's something new I've learned already .it is all a bit confusing about b3, aby .as mine is a ninety not sure of compatibility of parts etc .the fan has been wired to a switch inside which I don't like , the windows are permanently live also back lights were not sealed properly and got water in now not working right .the car is for long term so will slowly go through it replacing everything .

OK bit of a run down:

All the coupe are a B3 chassis, just the later models post 1991 have the faclifted B4 front end on them. All coupes leak
There are loads of threads on the forum about the various common areas - rear lights are an easy one to sort out - there is a butyl mastic seal that gets old and dries out - you can replace it quite easily and a good time to fit the nicer looking later style tail lamps.

Windows should be live for a time after you have taken out the key, but IIRC should go off after you have locked the doors.
If the rad fan works correctly then the switch is probably just wired up to the radiator temp sensor so the fan can be switched on remotely from the switch in the cabin.
Have a look firstly at the temperature sensor on the bottom of the rad, as that is generally where the wires are tapped into for an override switch, or the fan relay

Hi Vinny & I have a roll of the mastic seal - oem Audi stuff & enough to do both rear lights - the windows stay live until the door is opened & ignition is off (unless of course the relays/thermal fuses are having a moment
