Welcome, I used to have a couple of these years back. They make produce a lovely engine note without a turbo getting in the way. Is it a KV or NG engine code? Hope it is treating you well. Mine never let me down, were super reliable but ate petrol without giving much in return apart from the best noise.
its an NG, i agree whole heartedly, its sounds gorgeous and the fuel consumption isn't a problem as yet. it is having a few running issues though, it has some sort of fuelling issue, it accelerates lovely in all gears, but seems to stutter/ struggle when maintaining a steady speed in whatever gear, the previous owner did a whole heap of work to try and fix this; cleaned out fuel tank, new pump/ accumulator/ filter, new dizzy cap/ rotor arm, new leads and plugs. the next thing he was going to try was the metering head, but i have no idea if this is the thing to do. aswell as this problem when in motion, is has an irratic/ hunting idle when stationary and i have to feather the throttle to stop it stalling sometimes. the issue does seem to get better once the engine is warm, but doesnt dissapear. :-( any thoughts?
Hi Lee and welcome. Your idle/missing issue is almost certainly an air leak somewhere in the vacuum system, have a good look at the connections to the ISV and underside of the inlet boot, these engines hate air leaks. Ran an NG engine Coupe for nearly ten years and 60K+ miles, it only let me down once when the dissy packed up.

it had been suggested that that might be the issue, but as i'm quite unfamiliar with the NG, i'll have one of my mechanic mates to have a gander. if it is something as simple as an air leak, then that would be wonderful as i know the metering heads can be an issue. the car does smell quite petrolly once i've stopped the engine, like its overfuelling, is this one of the symptoms? also, i have no idea how to control the rear wash/ wipe, i think maybe a new stalk has been fitted but the front wash/ wipe stalk only controls the front, where should the rear controls be?
Isv itself sounds like it to me
I had a couple of Kv s that wouldn't idle and I d have to left foot brake to keep it running till warm, but it was fine otherwise
Check the isv moves and it's not fitted with a crap Chinese copy with no insides(a customer bought one off eBay and it was cr*p

Cheers, Lee
Firstly look at the vacuum circuits as suggusted above
Rear wash/wipe could be the motor, stalk or relay - the motors tend to get gunked up with old grease that congeals into sticky goop. Stalk contacts tarnish and wear out, and the relays can get dry solder joints. First thing would be to test the electrical connections at the motor and go from there
I had an NG engined 90 quattro before my S2. I traced a wonky idle to the throttle switch ( hell of a job to change without taking the inlet manifold off ). You will have a problem getting to the ISV as well. Changing the air filter was also a pain... all that said, she sounded gorgeous and the chassis could handle a lot more than 136 bhp... Sadly she got t boned in a shunt after I had sold her..I nearly cried, all that TLC gone to waste.
