Their not actually that bad on fuel if you just cruise along, 30 MPG is possible, but drive them in a spirited fashion and your looking sub 20 MPG, sub 10 is achievable in a remapped car.

I bet the 16V Scirocco did go well, their a couple of 100 KG's lighter than a Golf and handle better as well IMO. What a pity such a rare car had been converted to RHD, I'd love a LHD Scirocco with PAS and brakes that work.

I did start installing a KR engine into one of my old GTX's but I purchased a Corrado VR6 got side tracked and ended up breaking it, to be honest I'd never of been happy unless I managed to find a proper inlet manifold etc.

        From my experience

Daily driving: 19-21mpg (my normal average month to month)
SENSIBLE long run: 30mpg, 35 if you can sit at 50-55 flat throttle, but that is only if you are trying to do a economy run
Hooning it: as low as you want

Just get one and worry about the fuel later. Can't imagine it's any worse than the G and I'll be significantly faster than a 300e, especially chipped / RS2 / +++

the Scirocco had fantastic brakes and no rear caliper issues either, G-Wagen, a 5 speed manual does 19 or 20 in normal mixed driving, an auto won't better 18, the 300e does 25ish. We have Lupo too for cheapskate driving.

I think you should snap up the white one. I paid 3k for mine knowing it needed work. Probably spent 4 plus since. Its worth buying one thats been lavished already..
30 plus mpg?? Jesus 23 is my best i reckon.

it was speeding tickets that made me venture into driving g-wagens, I think I have quite a lot to learn about technical specs, faults and options before I take the plunge so I will be ploughing through the forums posts trying to learn as much as I can. I have always liked the coupes styling, I like 4 wheel drive and the 5 cylinder makes a very special noise, having the whole car made out of galvanised steel is the icing on the cake.

I got my first speeding ticket in the S2 although surprisingly it was 36mph in a 30zone rather than wharp speed on motorway.

Economy wise, I am lucky to get any better than 19-21mpg in my RS2+ spec coupe unless I literally drive it below 1500rpm in every gear (Which is impossible) Drive it with proper spirit and sub 15 is easy. Like Jo says, fuel economy will be the least of your worries. Super unleaded is available and relatively cheap. Parts availability, costs and various ailing old components are more of an issue. Enjoy one of the last of the proper affordable cars whilst you still can.
