    advice

    Hi
I'm new to Audi S2 ownership and also to S2forum.com so I apologise if I have posted this is the wrong area.

My newly purchased S2 seems to be standard and well looked after. I would like to extract the best from the engine and would like to start with some new software to the ECU.

Along with this can anyone please suggest the best way to enjoy the sound of the 5 pot. I would prefer for the car to look standard but a better flowing exhaust would be welcomed.

Will a cat bypass improve performance and sound it will it just cause me issues when it comes to MOT time?

Any recommendations for mild mods which don't cost the world would be much appreciated

    Cheers
    Dan

Best advice - settle yourself down with a few hours on the forum to get a feel for where things are.

You will find various FAQs and "sticky" threads.

Also we have a great search function on here which will save bags of time.

To your specific questions there are threads along lines of "best value upgrades" which will help you.

A well fettled S2 only needs a software upgrade to give it some extra zing, and it responds well to a better flowing exhaust - less back pressure the better is the rule for anything turbocharged.

You will soon be wanting upgraded brakes and improved handling.

Oh welcome by the way and hope you enjoy the fun and pains of S2 ownership.

      Thanks Paul

I've booked the car into a company in haywards Heath for a medical. If all looks strong then a basic chip with a predetermined map.

I'd like to keep the original exhaust if it has plenty of life in it but would just like a little more noise and better flow. What's best options please?

I will keep all informed if of interest. I mean this won't be t he most adventurous of projects but who knows where it might end

Haywards Heath you say - easy to guess what specialist that is then - not heard much of them in a long time - I suspect most of their trade is in much more recent Audi machines.

Anyway - Have a search for 'Homefry' or 'Homefries' on the forum and shoot me a private message if interested... I am still brewing these when the need arises (and when I am not drowning in day job).

Off the shelf exhausts are hard to come by - we used to have Milltek, Supersprint and others but unless you get a nice one 2nd hand on here, then you are probably looking at a custom stainless exhaust - reckon on not much change from £1000 for that done properly.

What model and year is the car Dan? The earlier cars don't actually need cats for the MOT

A Homefry chip will really bring the car alive, but beware, modifying is a slippery slope, you'll be re-mortgaging your house before you know it

Are you based in the south-east Dan? For an exhaust you could try someone like Longlife...should be able to make one up for around the £500 mark and mines been on the car for years without issue and still going strong.

If its a pre Aug 1992 model then you can remove the cats as it will be subject to a less stringent emissions check than later versions.

Homefry on a healthy S2 is a revelation versus stock, you'll be left wondering why they didn't ship them that way

Thanks to all for getting back to me.

Paul I believe I've sent you a message ref Homefry etc.

My car is a 1994 S2 Avant with a ABY engine so i assume the Cats are required for an MOT???

Maybe a better flow back box will give me the desired slight sound increase and hopefully help the engine breath.

Pics to follow......sorry been slow on this front. For the record I like most German marques and I am really enjoying the S2 as it feels very refined.

I just hope its a good one, too early to tell yet. Hopefully a full inspection next week.

Absolutely when I first got my S2 I said to my wife that I'm only going to clean it and leave it as it is and she said to me that she is sure I will modify one thing and then there's going to be another thing and guess what, she was right before I realised I was on very slippery slope
If you will map it,I think you should at least invest in better breaks as the standard ones are not that great in my opinion .

Got your message re the homefry - replying on that today.

Meanwhile, Dave's suggestion about Longlife exhausts is a great idea - I totally forgot about them. They could sort you out with a 'cat-back' system - you will need CATs to pass UK MOT on a 1994/95 S2.

If funds permits then you can look to higher flowing 'sport' CAT(s) - I am sure there will be threads on that subject already - especially if there is a good option that deletes the restriction 'Y' pipe section on the ABY exhaust and uses a single sport CAT. That all gets expensive quickly as you will no doubt find out.

If the exhaust is in good condition then you might find a decent back-box lets a bit more burble out.

                        Cheers,

                        Paul

PS - regards Pics - if you are taking something straight off a camera or recent smartphone then the image is almost certainly too large to post here directly - just resize if down to something like 800x600 and you should be good. I cannot remember the upper limit for picture sizes.

Get a HOMEFRY from Paul, I have a RS2 Homefry and it makes the motor Alive plus Paul is a honest chap no issues with him.
