  • Tdi quattro avant

So as a few members know after the ur quattro I needed something else to drive around in.

After owning this before and missing it after the accident I decided I wanted another.

This turned up on classic audi being sold by a forum member from that site and this one so I paid for it and spink drove it down from up north to me.

I drove this around for a while slowly messing with bits as and when I got them. In the end as the bodywork needed some work I ended up getting geoff carter to spray the car, this was quite a few months ago and after deciding to go that far then the rest needs tidying up to match.

I then used some of the funds from the urq to get some more bits for the car and it was decided that it would be converted from fwd to quattro

I'd purchase a 1.9tdi quattro a4 that had a starting problem off flea bay so me and madwolf went and picked that up and it was taken to bahnstorm tuning to remove what was needed. I also had the remains of an s2 avant from christmas for anything else that was required.

This proved a bit of a pita way to do things as tbh I never used half the stuff on it.

    I found the following issues:

the tank from the quattro won't work, the filler nozzle is closer to the front of the car so does not line up anymore - This car now has an s2 avant fuel tank with the a4 lifter pump fitted.

The rear beam/hubs etc I ended up binning off and using s2 avant stuff so I got the working diff lock switch and it was in better condition than the a4 stuff.

There was quite a few other things wrong with the a4 so I took what was worth it and the rest was disposed of.

After this I ended up fitting up a lot of the other bits that geoff had painted up. It was his idea to do the mirrors/grill/bumper grills the colour they are, I must admit it looks better in person and makes the car look more modern.

    Pics are not in order.

I had these wheels for quite a while so thought they'd go well on the car, that is until something else come up as winter wheels but suit the car well enough so i'm leaving these on the car.

    winter wheels

I will get some pictures of the interior up soon. It has the following to go into it:

    climate thanks to rjscotty
    rs2 recaro's - now heated thanks to error404
    heated rear seats
20v nardi steering wheel from my ur quattro
    black headlining
    rs2 dials
black carpet unlike the gray then blue carpet the cars previously had.
    heated door locks
    cruise control
intense wash function wiper - not sure what i'll control with that yet
electric windows all round (the car never had this originally)
The car is now a 6 speed with a tdi box from sleeper avants car so should go well whilst still getting good mpg. The ecu was remapped by a company quattro nutter uses to the spec I wanted.

It is full 5 stud s2 hub'd now and has porsche brakes to go on the front of it. with custom coilovers.

The cars being changed over to a complete s2 wiring loom and abs setup (abs for space under the bonnet) including the battery in the correct place in the boot.

There is a few bits still to come back from painting including the s2 sideskirts and b/c pillar trims. The windscreen and rear windows are waiting to be put back in by the windscreen guy geoff used.

There is still a bit left to do, biggest issue is I left my job I was working a while ago and since then not had much luck finding something else and just trying to survive till something comes up so it is only progressing with stuff I already have. So thats as far as the car is currently.

Wow. So much work. I didn't know you could convert fwd avant to quattro.

Is there much difficulty in removing that last 'quarter window' on the side of the avant? Are the rubbers able to be reused?

Wow, fantastic, a modern times s2/rs2.
Owning an s2 avant and a tdi avant i had similar thoughts this week but not to this level.
I think it would be easier to convert the S2 to TDI than the other way though.
The gearbox is the hard part, deisel gearing and 4wd, thats where i stopped thinking about it.

        Wow

        Hi

The car looks great.................... would never have know same base car

        Many questions

How easy was it to convert rear suspension to quattro set up? mounting holes etc?

What 6 speed box you use?

What wheels you using now on her(the white ones)

Are you using the 1.9 tdi engine or the 2.5 tdi engine?

How is this going to affect insurance etc..................as my s2 shell has gone...........(dad had it removed from his drive after 3 years and no real progreess)...i was thinking of doing this to a another Avant

Cant wait to see her in the flesh

        Cheers

It's a disease all of us, but really impressed with your work so far. Just what we all day dream about doing.

Black grilles would be my choice.

          Looking forward to further updates.

Best of luck on the job front as well.

          Kind regards.

only on saloons and avants. the coupe's floor pan is a nightmare to do.

I didn't remove them but they was bonded in (I checked this on a spare car using the hammer method ) and the rubbers can be reused.

I thought about that and in some ways I should have done it as I had both but chose to do things the hard way yet again.

there are a few boxes you can use. petrol quattro boxes or diesel both are available in 5/6 speed options, its just matching up everything to go with them like prop, mounts, linkage etc.

not bad - but you need all the brackets off a quattro to do it properly.
              I'm using a 2.5 v6 a4 box.
Most likely the s8's once they've been refurbed.
1.9tdi a4 engine, I get proper vagcom then, later ecu, its already remapped.
I will tell the insurance most likely but should not be much of an issue.

Yeah i'll see about the grills/mirrors. They look better in person but its a bit love/hate with a few people. Once the last few bits are on it should all go well.

                Quick question myself.

How much or where is a good place to have the door trims redone? Mine are getting slowly there where the foam is perishing

Do you have any pics with the BBS cross spokes fitted?

I really like these, but I think you've made the right choice with the Avus wheels

Thanks for that info, have to remove those windows on the avant and wondering if I can save the glass and seals.
Are you doing away with the outer lower door trims by filling in the recess? Or is that just shadow play?

I don't unfortunately. I never tried them on the car in the end which considering i've owned those wheels for quite a while. When the avus went on the car it swayed the decision plus quite a few people said the avus suited it.

They will be refurbed once i'm back in employment and painted the same white as the rest of the car.

The lower trims on mine was removed then the clips removed and the tags ground off (the drivers front door didn't even have the clips on it as it wasn't the original one from this car)

The sideskirts are yet to be fitted as geoff wants to do some stuff to them.

He's done quite a bit on the bodywork including replacing the front wings, drivers door, removing the side repeaters and just sorting out the issue's with the body.

Its a case of either getting replacement foam from the following:

                            audi tradition - big bucks
a breaker avant - its finding a set that are in better condition than what you currently have.

If its just coming away from the panel you could try and stick it back on but if the material is actually perishing/dying then its more involved.

Yeah I think I have managed to keep it in position as much as possible. I bet I need to go to a specialist trimmer and have it done properly now
