Cheers mate, it's a pity that those photos are so rubbish as that entire system is close to mint. I've just changed the speakers for some 50W RMS two way items more in keeping with the date of the rest of the system.

Those 65W RMS three way ones are going in my conservatory. Have just managed to taken a couple of slightly better photos, well I hope they are, look fine on my phone.

That's a nice little system David, a little tiny bit modern for me but I'm sure someone would love it.

You really only need the D5 (which is the lest costly of the two) for pot's and switch's, I got the F5 as well for servicing my mixer and pitch controls on my 1200's.

No problem. It's a great product I have to say so I can see why it's expensive, I'm going to gradually service all my old amps by cleaning the dust out then giving all the pots and switches a little squirt with the stuff.

I did a little SU-X911 amp yesterday evening as it sound considerably down on volume compared to another technics amp I've got of much the same wattage. Took an hour or so as I pulled the whole front end off as well as the main cover to get rid of all the dust as well access all the pots and switches, did all the connection blocks I'd had to separate to get the thing apart as well. Absolutely transformed it so it was well worth the effort.

I use the normal caig deoxit for loads of stuff on the cars and bikes, it’s great for bulb holders like the ones for the rear numberplate that get corroded and the headlight bulb connectors. All your lights end up brighter. Also use it on switches and speaker connectors etc.

The pot and fader stuff is great for the volume and tone pots, they used to do a tiny spray pot 1” diameter and 4” tall, which I have here, it lasts ages.

Yeah, I can see it being great for all sort's of electrical stuff, not just audio equipment, I'm already very pleased with the results on the two amps I've done.

Thanks for helping remind what the stuffs called, the tin's I've got are the 5 oz size (still pretty small) and only a tiny squirt is required on pot's and switches so the D5 will last me for years. As I said I got the the F5 as well as it seemed more suitable for the pitch controls on my 1200's as well as the faders on my mixer, as some of those are not metal to metal, though I'm yet to give that stuff a try, a tin of that will probably last me for life.

Going to give your speaker switch bypass tip a go on the SU-V40 amp I've got for my conservatory, sized it up the other day while I had the cover off doesn't look too hard, just need my hands in steady mode to be careful with the soldering. I swapped the female ends on some XLR leads that I'd purchased in error for male ones yesterday, which granted is not difficult or fine work but I managed fine, apart from burning one of my fingers a little like a total spaz.

I've decided to go for normal speakers in there as I'm pretty limited on power points and retain both sets of HS5's to go along with the HS8's in my front room for mixing, it really is complete overkill but by F does it sound good and my neighbours, who annoy me intensely by mowing their lawns at 07.00 (on Sunday mornings) among other things also get some serious payback.

Time for some more retro Hifi, I was so pleased with the results I got from servicing the little SU-X911 amp I thought I'd have a go at some more serious bits of kit.

Picked up these two as spares or repairs from eBay for £40. They both work pretty well as they are, however the SU-55A needs two switch bulbs replacing as well as a good service but is working fine otherwise.

SU-V450 has been stored somewhere a little damp and the volume pot is stiff as hell which I'm sure is effecting the sound quality.

Their both actually really nice amps amps and if all they need is a good clean out and the pots and switches sorting out I'll be well chuffed and quid's in.

This old Technics kit is seriously good quality, way better than the modern stuff.

I know you can get better amps, Nad's for example are considerably better but for the the price and type of music I'm into these are perfect.

As a rule I only listen to old school dance music (mostly hardcore), classic rock/hard rock and heavy metal as well as radio four, if I was into classical music then I could see the point in spending more money on an amp.

I could be interested in that old amp of yours depending on model and how much you want for it, assuming of course you want to sell it in the first place.

I still listen to virtually all my music on vinyl as well as cassettes , I've only just warmed to CD's. There's no way I'm going for MP3 and blue tooth etc, I will freely admit to being a luddite.

Just had to purchase a new copy of Metallica's truly awesome 'Ride the Lighting' on 12" as my old picture disc copy has started to wear out.

Found two dry solder joints on the switch bulbs so they're an easy fix which is a result. I would be taking more photo's of what I'm doing however my phones camera is playing up, think I need to turn it off and on again, that normally seems to improve matters.

Brief update for the fellow retro Hifi enthusiast's, got the the SU-V450 working properly again.

Took a full strip down and clean of the internals and a lot of work on the volume pot as well as the the bass and treble ones all of which were very hard to move. Now operates perfectly again, still got a bit of work to do on the cosmetics but very happy with the results.

The CD player on top was another repair job, that was full of dust causing the draw to jam, cleaned it out and used a tiny amount of the F5 Deoxit on the sliding parts as well as this seemed like the appropriate product, sorted now works perfectly again. So that was a good £10 gamble.

Am waiting on more gas for my soldering iron to get the SU-V55A done, sods law I ran out after doing the first dry joint.

Funny you should say that I've been think the same thing.. Got two more Amps on the way that cost next to nothing due to silly little things like broken speaker connections to sort out. Joined a Retro Hifi forum and found solutions that cost next nothing straight away.

Plus it's something I really enjoy (almost as much as cars) and can do it sat in my living room late at night in comfort. I barely sleep as you may have noticed from some of the times I post on here, it's not that unusual for me to go 48 hours with no sleep or perhaps an hour or two despite being on sedatives. My hands can make fine soldering a challenge but as long as I do it in the evenings, take my time and find things to rest my forearms on I can manage.

I'm about to get the soldering iron out and sort the dry joints on the lighting board of that SU-V55A, can't wait to get that back together!

The two I'm in currently in the process of doing will be retained as their really nice bit's of kit, especially the SU-V55A, I'll be parting ways with my SU-V40's and having to upgrade my speakers.

When I say upgrading my speakers I mean in my conservatory...

Think I've got the living room more than covered!!!

There's 3mm of neoprene in between each of the speakers and despite looking on the piss in my pics they're actually pretty much bang on upright.

Had to modify my speaker stands somewhat to make them strong enough and get the height correct, the tweeters on the top HS5's are exactly the same height as my ears when stood mixing which is what you want due to their highly directional nature.

If I want to listen to music sat down I turn the top ones off.
