I have an almost original WR quattro which was a Cat-d write off in the 90's and has very little history. The odometer was also broken for around 4 years before I bought it (now fixed) so the mileage can't be verified.
Would I be mad to swap in an ABY engine? - Before anyone asks no I'm not breaking any of my S2's, I have a spare engine.
I would be mainly be looking to do this for a bit of extra power and reliability. Since I've had the WR it has had starting issues which have been hard to nail down. Rather than spend a wedge at a specialist I was thinking fit an engine and system that I know and gain some performance at the same time.
From what I've read I could stick with the 5 speed gearbox that's in the car. So it would probably just be a case of swapping over the engine, loom and modifying the speedo etc.
I wouldn't be going big power so would look to keep the quattro running gear stock.
Friends have said that modifying an original car would be madness. But as I see it I'd be upgrading it to a much more reliable and desirable engine setup. The Cat-d status and lack of history has already knocked it's desirability for a collector so why not make the most of the car as a car to be driven?!
I've also seen cars with later engines fitted that are advertised at comparable rates to original cars so would the conversion actually damage it's value?
Any tips and opinions much appreciated especially as to the complexity of the engine swap which I have probably grossly underestimated the difficulty of!
