He must have meant Mk4, or Generation 4 Celica. Which do look quite similar to the S2 Coupe, especially from the side and rear.
I can't seem to find a pic of one at that angle though typically.

And the Gold Numpty Award for the most ill-informed comment goes to........

"An original 5 door scooby wagon with a mere 208 hp or so would probably be just as quick, if not quicker, than an RS2 cross country.."

I read this the other day on t'internet.

            Note on windscreen

            Worst:
Having abandoned my old S2 on the street one night for a drinking session, I arrived next day to find a scribbled note under the wiper that read "I'll give you £50 for this piece of junk"....
TBH the car had looked better, the wings were shot and she needed a good wash. My mate had spotted it too and even he said it looked a bit forlorn parked on it's own, but even then... Harsh!

            Best:
Not long after I'd bought it was stopped at lights in Plymouth, and a crossing pedestrian stopped right in front of the car, nodded his head up and down, gave me the , then walked off...

I've not had that many comments about the S2 (yet). Most people seem to think that it's just an old Audi avant, which is fine by me!

The guy that did my MoT the other week seemed impressed though, he said it was a really nice example and seemed to like the short-shifter.

My mate at work keeps telling me it needs some bigger wheels, whilst another mate seems to think it has really big wheels already (They're the standard 16" Avus' , though he does drive a Volvo!).

And the old dear seemed quite surprised when I told her how old the car actually was.

I like that it doesn't get audible comments from strangers and passers by...

T'other week I had a bike freak as a passenger who 'doesn't do cars except for A to B journeys' was a bit perplexed at the wave of torque he was experiencing and he says

"Hold on, how many gears has this thing got - do you have to use them all ?"

Years ago when I was trying out some ECU tweaks on mine on a weekend that a relative was staying with us... I took him for a spin and the air was mostly blue - he had never been in anything that torquey before. I seem to recall he made some joke approaching one of many roundabouts in MK when he quipped along the lines of

"Pity the brakes aren't as good as the engine".... Harsh but fair.

Hmmm... was sat down watching the rest of the cars go up Fintray hillclimb a fortnight ago and lo and behold, I had an Audi expert on hand who guffawed and said 'did anyone see that A4 estate that passed us on the way into the paddock... it can't actually be in the event?!? it's an estate!

... I felt like opening my mouth to differ, but couldn't be bothered and I thought I'd let the car speak for itself instead

I was 21 when I bought my Avant and I got alot of ripping from some of the lads I work with because,

                              a) It was old.
                              b) It was an estate.
                              c) It was an Audi

None of them who mocked me have been in it but they now know what its capable of.

Sounds a bit like the driver of the R34 Skyline GT-S I anhiliated last week, with 3 people in the car, half a Rover K-series engine and my big chest toolbox.

Slightly off subject....and not specifically about my S2, but my Dad was enquiring about having his 20v Quattro serviced at a certain Audi MAIN DEALER somewhere in East Anglia (mentioning no names!). Whilst describing the car to the guy on the phone he was certain that not all quattros were 4wd...........!!!!!!!!!!!!! Honest
