Has to be a 911 (964) Aircooled Turbo for me, even up against the new ones. This is the holy grail of the 911 world

Yep, either the 3.3 or the later 3.6, both absolute animals (with more than a hint of lag!).....gotta be in black with speedlines tho!!

Just thinking about it for an investmet I would love a flatnose 911 (930 I think they were designated after the racing versions). The more I think about it........it is getting near christmas and I would like a new project. Dont think the other half would agree though!

I hope you're feeling flush! This has to be one of the quickest flatties, its the MD's car, we drove it ages ago and its fast as f@@@@@@k!

If the Gayman was styled differently then I'd quite like it. It'll drive better than a 911 due to mid engine, it's just the looks I don't like. At least the 914 928 944 968 were all different cars, modern Porsche have the corporate front end and wings and doors and boot

I love the old FUCH's too, they dont fit 964 or turbo tho. Paul Stephens had some reps made to fit some of their Autoart cars tho, basically, they're based on 964's but made to look like more old skool 911's of old. (modern reliability but retro looks). Great fun as well..

DEFINATLY a cayman! as alot of you know i work on these cars and the cayman will out perform the old 911s if you get the right one. its NOT just a boxster with a roof, the suspension is completly different and its different to drive. details of the facelift one were released yesturday. its going to have the DFI engine and PDK as option. this means 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and launch control. PDK is an amazing gearbox, just amazing.

as for what your after i would go for the cayman as its the newer 9x7 platform. personally i think the 996s look dated. another issue is they are plaqued with trouble when it comes to rear main oil seals. the interior finish and look is streets ahead on the cayman. if you can opt for one with PASM, its very good! sports exhaust is nice too

the air cooled stuff is high maintaince and very qwirky, will demand alot more care but generally they are very nice cars when maintained! expect to be repairing niggles alot!

things to look for on 996's, radiators leaking (fecking expensive) and very common, rear main oil leaks, cam cover leaks (spark plug tubes on early ones). rattles. leather is not the best quality so look out for wear.

cayman issues, clutch judder has been abit of an issue. early ones suffered from really bad bufferting from the rear. this was sorted out. later on. can be very taperty on idle, this is normal and should go after run down road. if not one or more of the hydraullic tappets needs changing (same story on 996 but not as common).

key point, make sure they have a decent service history and dont need a majour service as its a pain to do on the deck and a garage will charge an earth due to nature of spark plug location!

                        hope this helps

oh yer the other thing with the old 993 and previous is that the pedals come out of the floor (beetle style) and they are very offset to the steering wheel. it annoyed me but i guess you get use to it! the LHD version however is nicer to drive

another bonus if you get a well speced 2.7 cayman is that its not in the super high tax band, however this is all changing next year so isnt so important!

Car isn't for me. Just wondered how my dislike of the styling compared to more general opinion although we're here due to a very specific common interest in older cars .
