    Ebay seller rant

Its not often lately that I go on ebay but thought i'd go on there for a new set of rims for on the avant. Found the set that I was after finally after a few weeks searching and was watching the auction, sent an email to the seller asking what fitment was which he replied was right for my car.

Asked him since there was not much interest in the rims if he was interested in ending early so I didn't miss out on the rims, he agrees so I went up last night to pick up the rims which all seems to go ok and they are loaded up easily in the back of the avant, it being dark I didn't get a chance to check them over properly and he did mention that two of the tyres was on the limit on the inside edge which I thought was fine.

After a bit of a nightmare journey home last night (don't ask my fault ) I decided to get up early this morning to fit them, when I went and got the first rim out the car (with one of the decent tyres on I might add) I thought it was a bit wierd that it was flat and when I checked so was a couple of the other rims. I tried pumping up the one wheel with a incar pump thingy and apart from it killing this I found that it had been stabbed on the sidewall to make the tyre useless.

I took the rest of the rims down to the local garage to use the pump there and found all the other tyres have been done in an identical way all thru the sidewall with what looks to be a small screwdriver. I didn't mind as much about the two low tread tyres but the other two was practically new and I can't see what he gained by doing this to the tyres? If he wanted more for the rims he should have said when I asked him what he wanted, now i've got the fun of finding some new tyres to replace these.

I've been tempted to run slightly wider tyres at the rear on the avant:

    front - 205/40/17
    rear - 225/40/17

anyone think of any problems with this setup? I know the tyres will fit on the rear with it being lowered with no problems just want to check.

    Ebays really going downhill

May I suggest that you stab the seller in the neck with a small screwdriver? That is very weird behaviour, I think the poor guy needs therapy of some description.

I thought about emailing him to ask about it but doubt i'd have got much of a response from him about them and since they was out of ebay then I loose the chocolate ebay fireguard protection still the wheels alone (providing there is no more hidden surprises) was cheap and the real deal.

Hmm you'd probably be wasting your time as you say. What wheels did you pick up for the car?

Maybe he was selling them because they'd been sliced?.. seems pretty wierd to think that he'd slashed them himself!

Only reason he gave me for selling them was he sold his car on because he couldn't afford it, I didn't see any cars parked around his house and outside which the wheels would fit.

They was a set of 17 inch borbet c's

I really can't believe some people. Gawd, it would have to take some real small minded, spitefull and petty person to do that, just because he didn't get full whack for them on ebay of all places.

Though to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe they had been vandalised when they were fitted to his car, and he ended up replacing the lot. It still means that he would know about the damage though, either way.

At least the wheels sound like they were a deal Pete.

Yes there is a problem with that setup your 205/40/17 will have a different diameter/ rolling circumference to the 225/40/17 .
the 40 in ***/40/17 is an aspect ratio not a dimension and thus changes with tire width.

205/40/17 = diameter of 23.5 in and 860.0 revs per mile

225/40/17 = diameter of 24.1 in and 837.0 revs per mile

this will not be good for you centre differential as it will be constantly working its nuts off .

I should mention atm, it might look like an s2 avant but its a tdi fwd. I was going to quattro it but thats been put on hold atm as I like the way this handles.

So hopefully for a normal fwd those tyre sizes should be ok?

@peteRR - what got me was every tyre was done in the same place, above the valve cap just on the sidewall and a real small one at that.

Seems a bit strange, perhaps he'd done it to stop you using illegal tyres, sort of health and safety or maybe he's just a nutter and you'd do well to ignore him.

Size wise, 205/40R17 should be fine, I think Fatty runs these on his sport

Always liked them, was trying to get bry to part with the one's on his 20v quattro sport for a while, in the end this set came up on flea bay so I went for them, just something to improve how the tdi looks. Its getting there slowly
