MOT Disaster!

Yes, deff needs welding up, if the MOT tester finds you've filled it he'll just fail it again anyway..
Then get some waxoil all over the bottom of the car to stop it getting any rustier!Comment

Dude, personal experience, got a beetle i thought was solid, drove it for a year then found it a bit rusty, was full of filler! Now have another one i am rebuilding and have not used any filler. All welds, ground flush and flat so not having to skim it with any filler. The other problem with using filler is even if u paint over it to try to disguise it, the MOTer will see all the filler lines as it is very hard to get filler smooth... ever, even if you think it is, with a paint on it, lines will show on the paint and if its on a structural part, I wouldnt feel too safe.Comment

Fair enough. I will take the advice on the chin and take the bloody thing off!
Darren, I may take you up on that offer if you don't mind?
Cheers Guys.

hmmm thats a pretty big hole there... I'd want to be sure that it was sound elsewhere before i decided to fix that. I had a repacement rear and when the garage was pressing out the old bushed discovered it was rotten by the mount for the rear tie-rod on the drivers side. we have a closer look over and it was knackered and decided to scrap it.sigpic

Gents, I have had a claw hammer in that hole and it won't open up! It is very localised. The rest of the sub frame is very solid.
If I was going to repair the hole I would have used chemical metal which is strong as metal anyway!
The Sub frame is coming off this week and then it will be repaired or swapped for a good one.

But decent rear subframes are getting harder to come by and if you don't need to use the car (which you don't) then get it welded up, shotblasted and then paint with POR15 and Chassis Coat, then spray the insides with Dinitrol cavity wax - better than new and will last longer than you!
May as well do the same to the wishbones and rear ARB while they're off too - surely extra points on the show n shine?

is there a reason why you wouldn't powder coat the sub-frame??......
I don't want to cheese you off Steve but mine passed after replacing my rear hoses, which was a job that wanted doing for a while, which was nice!!....
with all the people that suggest welding the frame...it will give you confidence to fix and forget about it...and you can concetrate on detailing...

My current plan is source a rear subframe that has already been refurbed swap it.
My time constraint is I have entered the show n shine at GTI on 28th June. So it has to be completed by then....
Thanks for all the GOOD advice.

.
Being honest i was against powder coating things like sub frames...had some front struts done and they're already losing the coating...done on the cheap though so my fault.
If its done properly there shouldn't be a problem, stripped, dipped, masked then sprayed.
I would still spray inside to reduce the risk of further corrosion.Carlos.
