    Overtaking, The lost accepted art...

Well, today, I've overtaken quite a lot really... Mostly in the Ur, but some in the RallyRep... And it's weird...

Nice open straight, slow moving string ahead, clear open road on approaching carriageway... Accelerate and over take 2 or 3 cars and pop back in, braking back to the 'running' speed in an appropriate gap, with plenty of room and without causing the string of cars to slow, brake or deviate...

    Flash goes the headlights....
Repeat the process... and... at the next recipient...

    Flash goes the headlights....

Right, wind forward a bit, and, Dual carriageway, splits into left lane left, right lane right... 2 muppets undertake on left lane, force out onto right lane within 100yds of roundabout...
    All accepted behaviour...

2 hours later, in rallyrep... Single carriageway, into left slip, then into dual carriage way... golf knob uses left slip to 'prove' superiority by undertaking, then right across the front nose into Dual carriageway, then left again to undertake car ahead...

    My simple question is....

Why does a classic, A road overtake, as laid out in the highway code, generate such fury, when clear, cretinatious bad driving just get accepted....

Most people can not drive properly. These are the same people who drive at 40 everywhere. 50 zone they do 40, 30 zone they do 40 absolute lemmings.

I can't answer the acceptance of cretinous behaviour question. However I believe the non-acceptance issue is because people are so scared of what might happen that they've allowed themselves to be brainwashed into thinking that an overtaking manoeuvre is automatically a dangerous manoeuvre whatever the circumstances. Maybe down to the fact they haven't the balls, ability or power to have a go themselves so don't realise that it can be done safely.

Completely agree with Dannyjenks - people are so brainwashed by the constant stream of "information" that certain things are very dangerous ...I've experienced the exact same behaviour

(and the behaviour you speak of Rich, I see that too ...somehow those people are never the ones who get into trouble though, or frowned upon...)

As for the undertakes and general bad behaviour - different people doing different cretinous things, but I suspect that the brainwashed majority are more shocked that someone might dare to enter a lane where opposing traffic might be seen - at some time of the day...

yeah I had something similar on a single road a week or so back but in the opposite direction, the car coming towards me as I overtook was flashing his headlights at me...he must have been over 1/3 mile away from me as i passed a slow truck and following car but flashing like we were about to hit each other.

Having said that you only need to look at the way people are taught these days to see why they don't get it. In the business park near me they indicate right the left to go straight over a roundabout stop on road a mile from the curb just after a 90deg left turn, wait an eternity at a junction when there is no traffic and then randomly just pull out into oncoming traffic at others.

Certainly wasn't the way I was taught (thankfully)

I'm sure we all get the flashing prats day in day out!

I did have one the other day, Megane mpv thing, followed a slow sod down to walking speed to turn left, as the slow git turned off megane gets on it. I shot past not wanting to follow the sheep. lights started straight away! never stopped! 65 year old with wife. Flashing lights non stop. Why? I got bored of him so just stopped in the middle of the road. That pissed him off good style! I just watched him turning purple laughing at him!
Two minutes later I set off again. funny no more flashing....

Two days later had an out of the car shouting session with Super car Vectra old git.
Three lanes into two just after some traffic lights. Wagons in both lanes. I sit behind git at the lights. he sets off like driving miss daisey! FFS! eventualy gets up to 35 in the 40 and we creep past the wagons. Just enough rooom to nip infront of wagon and squirt past vectra on a sunday drive. Yes I undertook him and no don't like doing it but I don't have a helicopter mode to do anything else! He tried his best to accelerate as hard as he could! Knob! why not while it was dangerous next to wagons with dissapearing lane? So the flashing starts! I ignored the imberseal until a bit further on he is trying to crash into me at a round a bout. so stopped got out and out gets 65 year old crettin saying you undertook me! So what have you never heard of keep left unless overtaking? BUT BUT comes back. Then I asked him if he was on the M1 going to London from leeds would get in the righthand lane at Leeds if he was turning right when he got to London? He said "probobly as you can only use the outer two lanes on a motorway!" FFS! I couldn't believe it!
Starts to make some sense now why you can't get anywhere!
I never get in anyones way. If someone is going faster I will always pullover and let them through. As you should! We have all been in a rush to get somewhere so on you go.

Only thing is all this rubbish stops if your in a yellow Esprit. Its bizzare, like parting of the waves! They all move! I miss that car...

Don't get me started on this one. I had a serving Police officer sitting next to me when I had advanced driving lessons. He was positively encouraging me to overtake where appropriate and we experienced both the person being overtaken flashing us and also the car coming in the opposite direction flashing on other occasions...

My insturctors reaction was to simply ignore them, as they clearly don't understand what the car is capable of and that there was nothing wrong with my driving.

I now simply assume they are congratulating me on a stunning overtake, give them a little wave and at the next overtaking opportunity dissappear off into the horizon!

It is sad though, that once you have completed an legal and fair overtake, that the person behind sticks to your ****, and generally then tries to get his own back. Yet they have absolutely no intention or abillity to overtake themselves. Hence the LONG queue of traffic in the first place.

                A lost art indeed....

Ditto that, People just seem happy to wait for next bit of dual carriageway these days. Had a similar issue a month back on my way to a show. Straight 'A' road and no-one overtaking the slow car in front doing 40mph in national speed limit, so next straight I floored it past all 5 cars in one go with plenty of room to spare and clear view of the road, get to front and guy is flashing and going beserk despite the fact once past them all I slowed back to 60mph ....the legal limit(didn't look to see what speed I got too as busy concentrating on the manouvre) . Some people need to go for a retest...

The art is not to pull in but to overtake 5 or 6 cars in one shot. That really gets the daily hate mail reader appoplectic

For added points put a few trucks in there.

The thing taht annoys me is when people follow a slower car so close that there's no room to pick them off and you have to muscle them about a bit. Some people are just phooking useless at driving, they don't think of anything other than the next metre of tarmac and themselves.

Rusty - that is my pet peeve too.. All these muppets just line up with zero brake distance between themselves behind a slow van or lorry or whatever... Even in the S2 you need a fairly lengthy open stretch to pass 5/6 cars - and then what happens is you are coming up to passing car 4 and car 6 starts to pull out cos he hasn't looked in his mirror... Then its my turn for headlights - and horn for good measure. *****...

:agree: If the numpties even allowed a couple of car lengths, you could pick them off one or two at a time. With them nose to tail, you end up passing the last car at about 110mph before you pull back in!

People should have to retake their test every 5 years IMHO, would weed out the useless pricks that make up 75% of the driving public - piloting a car should be a priviledge for those that are capable, not a right for anyone that wants to. It would definately go a good way towards cutting traffic congestion.

I find it all depends on the car your driving, i get this all the time driving the CQ because its noisy, do the same in the S4 and nobody seems to notice. Do it in the Porsche and you get smiling faces

With the exception of BMW drivers, dosent matter what your driving when you overtake they always decide there in a hurry and glue themselves to your back bumper.

And dont get me started on people hogging the outside lane, everybody in Ireland sticks to the right lane reguardless of their speed. The problem is obvious, learners are not allowed on the motorway until they have a full licence, and the driving test does not include any motorway driving. So as soon as people pass the test they venture onto the motorways for the first time with no clue what to do. These are the muppets that do 50 down slip roads, then slow down before merging with the traffic doing 70-80. Then they head straight for the outside lane and sit there at 50 oblivious to the traffic flashing them from behind

Funny thing is when you cross the border into N.Ireland they have the opposite problem, everybody drives in the left lane like a heard of sheep, every set of traffic lights you come to there are 10 cars in the left lane, and nobody in the right lane
