HELP!! Problems on Golf with Toad Alarm

My son has been having problems with his Golf. I've just had a bit of a look and its quite weird, he's been having flat battery issues and his driver's door would not unlock either with the alarm fob or the key even though the button on the door is going up and down. With the battery disconnected however, the door unlocks which seems to indicate that the mechanism is ok. With the battery connected, if you turn the key in the door to unlock and hold it there the other 3 windows in the car open

I've had the door card off and nothing seems to be amiss but I guess there could be something broken.

Before we start pulling the the dash out and try to trace and remove the alarm system does anone have any pointers or experience to share on this?

There's a 500mA current draw when the battery is connected so no surprise it goes flat.

Something makes a noise somewhere when the battery is reconnected, I'll try to find out what.

Strangely, everything is now working normally again, not sure what we did apart from fiddling about in the door but there is another issue which maybe connected, the drivers window isnt working, it just buzzes when you operate the switch and its jammed in the up position. This means we had to remove the motor to get the window down to remove the regulator.. extemely difficult..
The motor is the type which has a multipin connector and a piggyback controller in a rectangular black box. The motor runs ok when the controller is removed and it's powered from a battery but not via the loom from the door switch. So I'm thinking the controller is broken.

what year car is it?

couple of things to check, when locked can you hear the central locking pump pulsing?
could be damage to the handle as if its the model it sounds like they have a electric connection that can go wrong
and the window opening thing is common on vw's/passats from (mk3 golf and mk4 passat) if you hold it open the windows unlock, if you hold it closed they close

Cheers mate, Its a 1996 Mk3, Yeah I just found out about the "convenience feature" of the windows all working if you hold the key

I'm now wondering if there might be a wire broken in the door jamb so the relay in the motor controller is just chattering instead of pulling in prperly, I'll be well pissed off if this is all that's wrong as it took ages to get the regulator out Don't want to go buying a new motor only to find it doesn't fix the problem..

Any idea how the rubber thing in the door jamb comes away? Just read something about having to rotate it

Glad you got it sorted, didn't sound like too much was wrong.

be glad its not a 1999 passat or later as mines got deadlocks and one of thems come on and we can't get the rear door open.
