    Audi Allroad - Input Please?

    Hello all,

My girlfriend is interested in buying an Audi avant, an Allroad in particular but she's open to other possibilities such as a B6 A4 avant or B5 A6 avant. I dont know too much about the Allroad. Does anyone on here have one or have any input on it compared to the others mentioned. Any input is appreciated.

I had one for a year Diesel was terribly slow and also the air suspension went and cost an absolute fortune. Mine was a 2001 model purchased with 88,000 on the clock.
Plus points it had loads of space and looked kinda cool in a chunky off road kind of way, but I think I should have gone for the turbo, though that does drink fuel at a horrendous rate due to the weight of the car.

Overall if you don't need the space there are better options in the Audi stable..

      As above.....
2.5tdi can have tdi pump problems, faults from poorly replaced cam belts.
      Suspension issues, auto box issues.

Better going for a normal A6 avant.

2.5 TDI has cams and pump issues.
2.7 BiT has turbo issues, bypass issues etc... and it's double the fun, since there's two of everything.
The air suspension goes out taking the compressor with it and costs a fortune to repair... and this is not limited to "some unlucky owners", it goes on most of them.

If you need a such car then a Subaru Outback from the same time is a much better choice.
The new Allroad is better however.

a 530d is my advice. i looked for an allroad, a a6 tdi quattro, an a4 of the same type. all wer 2.5 and all had potential issues over the hill.

never hear of 3.0 bmw engine issues really. its faster too. i tested it.

My old man has a 2004 Allroad, he had a nice bill for a new gearbox (auto) when the car was just out of warranty from the Stealers, part from that no other issues. I have the 530d sport auto 2001 and he prefers the gearbox in that as the Allroad's is very lazy. I've had the 530 for 5 years and nothing (touch wood) has gone wrong with it.

Wasn't the allroad available with a manual 'box, surely thats fairly bulletproof. I have to say I know of one allroad that has taken dogs abuse and is still driving fine.

Don't get me wrong the A6 Allroad is a fantastic tool and will handle anything you chuck at it. It's also a excellent towing vehicle, just a few problems that should have been rectified by Audi are apparent in this car, but that’s why we have the next generation Allroad to resolve the problems found in the old model.. It still wouldn't stop me from buying one though..

does it have to be a tdi? there are plenty of other engines for the B6 A4 and a lot of people who haven't had many problems with them. same for similarly aged A6s.
My 3.0Q isn't the most popular engine choice but there are a lot of people very happy with the 2.5tdi. I can't comment on the allroad specifically as I don't know anyone with one. Depends what you want from the car and how you intend to use it I suppose. BMW 330d is a great car but nobody has to sell you the benefits of quattro on an s2 forum.
My B6 A4 has been absolutely reliable for the couple of years I've had it. it's one of the first B6s being Nov 2001 so i've upgraded to aero wipers and other bits and bobs. It hasn't given me any hassle right through a -30 winter or a +30 summer.
Audi-sport.net is definitely a good place for investigation.

Well known issues with swirl flaps failing, if they do its new engine time if they get sucked into it!
But, its quite easy to remove them.
Google "530d swirl flaps" and you will very quickly find some horror stories!

I'd go for an estate version of this, not saying it's everybody's choice but you pays your money etc etc

auto's which have been thrashed have pressure problems inside the box, easy test is to reverse it up a very steep incline, if it struggles walk away or knock aleast a £1000 off
