Could be that the blower motor has some play and squeaks? Does the noise occur when the blower is in the off position?1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

Not the blower. It's still there when its off. Started her up this morning and the noise wasn't there so I'm guessing its only when hot.
From te fact it stops once I put the steering underload it must be to do with the steering system.1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

Whirring Noise
Did you manage to get this fixed???
I seem to have the same problem on a Q5. High pitched whirring when no pressure is applied to the steering wheel. When a small amount of pressure is applied then the noise stops.
The car is currenlty in with the dealer having the PAS pump changed but they are scratching their heads a bit and just hoping this will fix it!Comment

Nope never fixed it....
The car is in the middle of a complete strip so the rack will be getting serviced while its out.1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

Its just the sound of the fluid going through the rack, maybe the shuttle valve rattling back and forth. Will is yours a 3B cos the servotronic ones I think make more noise, my 3B does it more than the ABY.. Check that the gaiter that seals the nose of the rack to the bulkhead is seated (mine has tabs broken off so lets in noise and has to be jammed down with some foam wedged behind the pedal box).
Also, if it is a 3B, try unplugging the servotronic controller under the back seat. The steering will be a little heavier at low speed but more consistant.Comment

nope, its aby.
I had a feel for that gator but from what i could tell it was in place. Im sure as i start taking bits off I may find the culprit. I think i may also service the rack with new seals.1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

Typical dealer. Throw a £500 part at the problem and hope for the best
