There was a thread on Pistonheads the other day saying that a lot of the online suppliers had DOUBLED the price of snow tyres since last week, then there is the issue of availability, almost everywhere I've just looked at are showing no stock.

I think the trick might be to buy them in summer

Not much use now, but a thought for next year.

You must be puddled going to work in this Andy What size tyres are you using and where did you get them from mate I'm fancying a nip out in the snow but not sure I'll get off the drive with my normal tyres on, we've got nearly 3 foot of it on the back

        cheers Paul

I said the same last year but didn't get around to it... So I decided to bite the bullet this morning and get some winters sorted.

The quattro is so progressive in snow it's unreal even with the bad summer tyres I've on at the moment. If you can clear the bodywork the car will go.

I've been looking at them for the last month, went to see my girlfriends brother on Saturday as he bought in £16k's worth of winter tyres(he's got a tyre shop) and they have gone in about 3 week he can't get any from his suppliers. I saw some 225/40/18's on the net for £56 each wish I'd a bought them, as like you say I can't find any for under £120 each.
Just some finishing touches to do now

Not really any snow down here in south wales either, we are usually badly hit when the UK get snowy, but not this time! Just a sprinkling on the verges and fields.

Im going to buy some winter tyres for the avus 16s next summer. No point this year as the prices have gone up and the quattro is currently off the road.
Ive never had much of an issue in previous years even with deep snow on summer tyres, quattro rules! But stopping it is dangerous, and some hills are impassable, just ends up spinning all the wheels and squirming about. I like the idea of being th only car that can get anywhere in the snow! Winter tyres are the way forward though.

What has everybody payed for their winter rubber?? And what size do you buy 205 55 16?

Might be that we are a bit better prepared for this kind of weather though.

I always use studded winter tyres on my cars though.
I'd love a set of studded tyres and suitable conditions over here

As Dan said, the majority over here just stick their heads in the sand snow and struggle on, little knowing how little drama it really is if you are suitably prepared.

They are 225/40/17's I think. I paid about £70ea last year, although I bought a set of 4 Pirelli snow tyres for Chris's S2 about a month ago, they were used but still had 5mm of tread, £80 delivered

The narrower the better in the snow!

You want something like 155/70/R17 snowies!

Just fitted these to the daily:

The difference on the way back from the tyre fitter was night and day. Glasgow to Aberdeen this afternoon though, so that'll be a good test of them; 150 miles of drifting snow.

Just taken me over 3 hours to get home cause of the traffic and very heavy snow fail. But looks like it could be fun later in the S2, if my dad make it home with it?
Just some finishing touches to do now

Well it seems there are limit to what quattro and snow tyres can do

Anybody who has been to my house knows that it's on a really steep hill and there was just too much snow and too many parked cars for me to get a good run, I had a couple of goes but thought better of it and it's now abandoned on the main road with about 100 other cars.

This was the work car park this morning, and even now it's snowing heavily
