    Avon snow tyres

    Hi
i know mines not a quattro ..but i just got home nw ,travelled over the moors up to the top of Baildon,to get home in my Audi 80 Avant TDI .i running Avon 245/45/17 ........there where a full set before winter but i worn the fronts to wear limits and put rears to fronts(FWD).,,and shes got std Perrilis at rear now..........

If i could afford to again i certainly get and keep a new set for next winter......
Quite a few costly 4X4s parkked along side rd ....owners looking at me thinking WHAT A WALLY hes not going to make it

But kept her in 2-3 gear and she grapped her way up the hill................i was well chuffed

    my 2 cents

    cheers
    john

      Ah, that was fun.

So first it snowed a little:

      ...and then a bit more:

The S2 got a pretty good covering:

      But still started first time:

Anyway, took her for a run to Waitrose. Got the **** end out going round a corner on the way there... then down the hill - had to laugh at the lines of people stuck behind one car with its front wheels spinning.

Took to the side roads on the way back, since the main road up the hill seemed to still be blocked (probably the same guy still there). Had a guy in an A4 with about 5 people pushing him, trying to get up the hill, ended up turning round.

Then some fella in a Volvo 4x4 had a try. Gave up pretty sharpish, too.

At this point I've got someone come over to my window telling me that I should just turn around. After all this waiting however, I was not in the mood for turning round. I was going up the god damn hill.

So, brute force and ingnorance it is then. Gave myself a good runup and absolutely booted it. The wheels were spinning to hell, but it didn't matter - I was moving and I was keeping moving.

The look on the pedestrians faces was priceless. Unfortanately, pedestrians do this great thing when it snows of assuming that they can just walk down the middle of the road

Anyway, here's to the S2 Umpteen years old and still putting new stuff to shame

I was planning to buy some winter tyres last week but never got around to it.

On Mytyres.co.uk web*****, the Falken HS-439 205/55 R16 91H were £56 each and this week they are £108 - Cheeky fekkers

Think I will buy some in the summer, but I can tell you one thing, Mytyres.co.uk won't be seeing any of mycash.co.uk

Summer tyres + quattro= great fun. Been oun loads of times in the snow with torsen equipped quattro cars and non torsen with summer tyres on, it is fun and virtually un-stopable, i think like most driving it depends on the drivers skills.

. I have mainly been using a disco td5 today, don't like the traction controll instead of locking diff, still doughnuts like a quattro though.

i have no problems with traction when it snows, and i have normal tyres, its just the stopping which as long as you use the gears aint a problem but on brakes no chance, i think snow tyres would benefit a lot in tht department , although driving slowly its fine

I have fitted my mud and snow tyres to my golf mk3 and its been unstoppable so far. Had them for years and they are far more extreme than the normal ones you see, more like a scrambler tyre with the blocks. They are not the best on the motorway though! Managed to pass a couple of 4X4's this week, they realy are crap on normal road tyres!

I was sitting behind a new TT this morning with its front wheels spinning trying to get out of my street. My citreon berlingo work van did a better job. Snow tyres for next year for sure though.

Might be that we are a bit better prepared for this kind of weather though.

I always use studded winter tyres on my cars though.

So well in fact that they have to build gates to stop you from getting too carried away!

Took this pic tonight after just been out after clearing all the snow of my car.

Everyone around stuck in the snow including our A4 and yet my 19 year old S2 drives up our street, great car.

Picked up a nearly new set of Dunlop winter sport 225/45/17 on eBay for £250 just in time

So icy out there at the moment though. Is anyone running studded, or are they reserved for our Scandinavian friends?

There's probably been another 6 inches since this pic..

Dug the Avant out and went into town, not many people about, the high street was completely covered with just a couple of tracks down it. Was quite slippy, ice under fresh snow and at one point on a heavy camber the car started sliding sideways towards the kerb as I took my foot off the throttle No dramas though, just drove out of it and got back fine having a bit of wheelspin and back end out action on the way.

Andy... you need to give it big licks and go lock to lock!
NEVER had the UR stuck on normal tyres! you seen where my parents live and it'll go up with 18" of snow.. had 110mph showing crawling up!

Got the snow tyres on my 80 from last year. Goes anywhere! scandiavian flick and its a drift machine!

As for the pics with two foot of the stuff on your cars, get it off! it weighs a ton!

still seen no decent snow in wiltshire/northamptonshire/hertfordshire

apart from a bit of snow that was ontop of a lorry and imported for up north yesterday lol, was interested in seeing southern drivers swerve when it came off the top of the lorry as they didn't know what it was....
