    My RS2 on UK registration

    Hi everyone.

I don't know if you guys from UK are aware of the new taxation in Italy....

Tears and blood they say and it's defenetely true.

I'm facing now a "road tax" for my 1995 RS2 of 2000 (twothousands) euros per year.
Was nearly € 1000,00 before, then Mr Berlusconi put a € 70,00 on top and our new prime minister went now for a € 940,00 on top of the lot....

I should (should it' compulsory in italy in this cases) pay the 2000 euros for the next 4 years and then accordingly with the italian law the RS2 should become an Historical Car, this will be the end line in which I should be safe and going to pay something like 170/200 euros.

I paid my road tax always since 1997...
    Starting with 720 euros
    Then 850 euros
Then 900 euros (because it's an euro 1 car)
Then 980 euros (because it's an euro 1 car)
Then 1053 euros (because.... hey! we're going like Greece so pay!)
Then 1993 euros (because we need to save italy!)

Well in four years I'm going to almost "buy" my car from the italian government...

Now after my cry....the questions for you Albion's sons:

Assuming I have a friend in England that can give me an adress in England where I could "live" for some months....
Assuming I have my social security number (well I do have it cause I worked there in the past)
Assuming I drive my RS2 to London (done that before)
Assuming I have a bank account in England

Can I apply for the following?

    Register my RS2 in UK
    Get UK insurance
Get myself a brand new UK Driving License
Drive my "brand new" British RS2 back to Italy

Now if I can possibly do all this....

What are the odds that you can see?

    I.E.

    MOT visits?
    Something else?

Thanks all for your precious cooperation!

It will not be as easy as you might imagine...
Most policies say that you must not be outside the UK for more than 30 consecutive days and not more than a total of 90 days in the year. You must also declare that your residence is the UK (not simply UK address)
    actually
On paper it will be fine, but I would be worried if anything happened.... It is possible your insurance would be invalid and not pay out...

Edit: Also, since you will have zero no claims, with the car being a LHD import model (also any modifications , etc), it is highly likely the insurance cost will be enormous... try and get a couple of insurance quotes to even see if it is worthwhile...

As above UK insurance would be the biggest problem and may be more expensive than in Italy?

I would be happy to "look after" your RS2 for 4 years if you're desperate.

This is exactly why Abt did the UrS6 with 1993 cc using an NM crank (we think) for the Italian market back in the day.

                    Stefano,

It's €827.00 per annum in Ireland, but yours is just cruel. What about using a country nearer to Italy which might be more "genuine" ?

                    No LHD issues for one.

                    Best wishes.

Will you need a UK licence? I think that you would be able to do it with an International Licence? A classic car insurance scheme might be more lenient towards the lhd and use out with the UK. If not, you could always buy a return ferry tickets with the car's registration every couple of months. It would work out cheaper than your tax that you have to pay. Possibly might be frowned upon by the insurance company though.

In the summer I registered a car in Europe for use on holidays, I just needed an address and a bank account, can't be much more complicated in the UK.

                          Thanks fellas for your feedbacks.

About the ABT 2.0 liters motors back in the 90s, it's true but the problem back there where a double jeopardy for the VAT meaning that cars over 2.0 liters had to pay 38% VAT, instead of the average 19%.

My ex 1991 S2 was touched by that.

But we have plenty to tell about silly and ludicrous car taxation trough years.
I.E. the first SUV (offroad back then) tax also back in the 90s, the system to determine if a car was a SUV/offroad was hilarious.....

4WD with more then six gears it's an offroad car isn't?

Could sound stupid to all of you (and it is!) but that was it.....

No need to say that the victims where the URS4s were them Audis or ABTs without regards.
This silly thing was cancelled few years later when the offroad cars trendy fashion stopped...

                          Back to my RS2.

The 2000,00 euros are NOT including my insurance ofcourse which is another 730,00 euros per annum

I'm considering also a nearest country.

But what about if I "sell" my car to a trustworthy friend in UK?
Then drive back to Italy using it (whith a written permit from him) and put back italian plates once it's historic?
What are the costs in this case?

I found myself in an ackward position...
I agree that if you have a powerful car you can pay more...... And I've done that!
I always paid my bills and taxes but this one it's against all reasonable common sense!

                            go for it

Try to register in spain, it cost 2000 euros, then you pay 200 every year "impuesto de traccion"... plus Spain is nice country to visit also The insurance is not a problem with the green card.

I say this cause I lived 1 year in Bristol using my own Lancia delta with spanish plates and spanish insurance... actually they cover a vandalism that I suffer at that moment.

                            Cheers
