Im heading for similar target -circa 380. Is a fatter downpipe than std not on the essentials list?

Not really.
I made 350hp on a S2 with stock exhaust with the cats on.
A decat will yield better results...
380hp needs a bigger turbo than rs2 though, unless you want to use meth injection.
Or you need an RS2 turbo and LOADS of mods, but that's expensive.Comment

Don't forget brake upgrade, suspension overhaul, decent tyres and things like replacement boost hoses, head gasket etc. etc. Much better to make sure all this is on place on a chipped car at a mere 280bhp than stick £2k of parts on a tired car and end up in a mess with £0 to sort it. There's no real cheap way of doing things if you do it properly but for evey piece of luck you have with things that are useable, you get more money to put towards the rest of the build...
3" exhaust is a good idea and a decen down pipe is also important and you might need a new clutch, if it's original. You also want an RS2 IC or Wagner Evo IC.
To do it properly, you're looking at about £3-4k... I've spent easily £15k on mine over the years to get it to a good mechanical state with all the toys I need to keep me smiling

This is just normal maintenance
The question is specifically about upgrading power. You'd assume normal maintenance has been done and the car is mint before attempting a power upgrade.
None of that is needed for 350hp. You can make 350hp on a stock decatted exhaust with stock DP on a RS2 turbo easily.3" exhaust is a good idea and a decen down pipe is also important and you might need a new clutch, if it's original. You also want an RS2 IC or Wagner Evo IC.
As I said - there are essentials and there are things that are "nice to have".
Telling someone 10k (or something) is needed and then putting normal maintenance items on the list does not make sense either. Not fitting a 3" exhaust or intercooler is not "not doing it properly" it just means you will lose 10-20 horsepower at this stage. Is 10-20 horsepower worth 2k? Surely not.
For example I don't understand putting 3" exhausts and huge IC's on stock cars. It'll make almost no difference.
IMO if your car is not perfectly mechanically sound then any spare money should go into fixing it, only when there is pretty much nothing left to do should it be upgraded.Comment

this is the route im taking brakes /suspension and boring stuff first then il think about powerNOT a car dealer! just an S2/RS2 enthusiastComment

oh its in great running order, only 95k with service hisory, only thing ive found at the mo is the front end is a bit twitchey, maybe (ball joint, bushes, TRE,) well i`ll find that, i`ll try the 280 first ie remap, exhaust, filter, see after that about the extra bhp, oh and my brakes are sound, stoped me from*** tonight no problem, And my wife worked for Samco for a long time, so no probs on that front

Huh? You only need a remap for 280.
Don't do anything with the filter besides changing the OEM one, it is very likely you will do more harm than good. If you fit a cone in there, it'll make your car slower, because it'll suck hot air from under the bonnet.
Same with the exhaust, it will just make your car loud with no gains at all, at this power level.Comment

correct, panel filter, slight mod to airbox, shows better figures, and the cones show -Huh? You only need a remap for 280.
