Owned several quattros and coupe's, wanted a fast estate and the S2 was right there... (had it ten years this year)
Never looked back... Beast of a machine, Dog, kids, topbox, full tribe on holiday loading, and still quicker than plenty of fancy modern fruit... Which doesn't have the 20vT 'concentrate' added....

The noise of a 5 pot is simply music to my ears. Especially between 5000-7000 rpm. Far far better that a V8, V6 or any other other motor in my opinion.
Quattro here on the forum took me out in his a few years back and I knew I had to get one, had to get a 1995 coupe 2.0 first though because of the cost of the insurance. Never looked back after buying mine even though it has cost me a fortune so far.
did made a test drive in 1991 when it went out for sale, i was 23 then !
i worked as a "valet parking service" in a famous restaurant as a student job and i drove all the supercars of the 90s, right out from the dealers, incredible stories: burnout with a testarossa, street races between 735 M & 928 S4, carrera 4, Lancia HF, Honda NSX...
but the S2 had it all :
4WD, 5pots, incredible sound, and you could go to winter sports with 4 in it with skis on the roof !
and still running like hell after more than 15 years !
i sold my last Sapphire Cosworth, wanted a late S2 Avant but nothing was about at the time i liked, so as a stop gap i bought a UR S4 and loved it!
but parking was becoming a nightmare as i moved near london from newcastle upon tyne, i was not about to sell my A4 so i sold the Tdi motor as a conversion for £1000ish, then sold my black UR S4 and took a rotten green nacker in p/x, i swiftly robbed the motor then stupidly decided to try and make the A4 fit the engine.............
many months later it worked, and never looked back
5 pot for life now, Rispec innit bruv
Edited************ my love of 5 pots is second to none from anything else, i even had a 5 pot in a sierra sapphire, but it was never finished and broken
Started off with a liking for polos, then Golfs, then Skoda vRS - sick n quick in the dry. Went Japanese for a while - Honda Accord vTec before coming back to the Allroader family wagon. I'd always said to the wife that for my 40th I wanted an S2 Aby. Great engine, great body work and very clasdy but smooth. I just love the fact that these cars stand the test of time.
Awesome Germany engineering!

First time I herd a 5 pot I was 7 year old and it was in the dark in Keilder forest. Being so close to the action with bangs ,cracks and flames The noise of the engine that night stayed with me (i think it was more fear at this point). I later inherited a 5 pot Passat that failed it's MOT to learn to drive. After hours and hours of thrashing it around fields and later a forest track I was hooked. I think that pulling the exhaust off and being 15 years old the easiest fix was a piece of flexi pipe and a few exhaust clamps helped to make the car seem like a super car. So after years of loving the sound track of the engine and the shape of the S2 I got the chance to own a toy and I am not letting it go.
Someone said "I know this chap who's got an S2 and needs the money and is going to accept the best offer down the pub on friday night" So I offered £2700
An S2 Avant or urS6 saloon has all the right boxes ticked for me - german, looks, timelessness, subtle and discrete, 4wd, I5 engine and soundtrack, six speed, no distributor, big intercooler, oil cooler, ability to take vag-com, chippable, abs, a/c, electric sunroof, leather, recaros, solidity, discs all round, independent rear suspension, five doors or big boot, no body rust, after run mechanism, central locking, additional gauges, ellipsoid headlights, a great forum, availability of tuning parts, cars being parted out currently, not too dear to buy. Dear to own if you want to get it and keep it to a good standard.
Never had most of these bells and whistles on the mk1 golf, so a novelty for me to have them as standard on an S2, urS6.
Don't really know, it was a spur of the moment thing to save it from being broken up.. since ownership it has been a very good motor as it was very well maintained by its previos owners.
