Yesterday I was daydreaming, as you do, about buying a nice light, simple car for trackday fun.
There seem to be a few MK2 Gti's that have allready been stripped out or extensively modified.
Some have the original KR 1.8 engine and some have the 2.0 ABF engine fitted from the MK3, a friend used to have a Gti 16v and I seem to remember it loved to rev, and was good fun.
Does anyone have any experience with these cars? When I look at the photos the mechanicals have that familiar VAG feel and layout that I have sortof become used too which is always a plus point.
What do you guys think? Was looking at cars bet6ween 1K and 3K.

I've had a normal 172 for 18 months and it's a proper laugh, a mate had a 182 Cup before that. The insurance is a lot but the tax is £245/year, so not exactly much more than the pre 2002 rate. On the plus side, there's rarely any rust to worry about and you get at least 160bhp out of the box and parts are al readily available secondhand in good condition, so you don't have to spend years trying to get it all sorted... With some straight forward tuning, you can get some good power out of them and they sound great too, very similar to the Golf! Still, RE2500's 2.0 valver is old skool kool and you don't get that with a Cliault.
