Can a URQ be a competitive track car?

Been doing a bit of thinking about this lately, mainly because a mate of mine has a really nice track going mitsi evo 5 that kicks the a*s of more modern and expensive track cars whenever he's out.
His is basically a fast road car with great suspension and dyno'd to suit track.
It really got me thinking of just converting my stripped 84 Urq to a 20VT track car with no frills.
I already fitted 986 calipers up front and H&R springs with koni shocks.
But i still get the feeling it would not be that agile on tight and technical bends i.e chicanes etc.
Has anyone any experience on this?
Im not so worried about power, but more about losing time on the tight and twisty stuff, as most of the tracks near me are not very long or big.
They tend to be ran around abondoned warehouses where the average lap is 1 minute long and is more about tight cornering and chicanes rather than insane power.
What i noticed over here (ireland) is that almost all the cars i see at track events in southern ireland (excluding single seaters) are all rally cars out for a cheap day out.
In my oponion there not focused enough on tracks to be as good as possible.
For example they all have two seats instead of one, along with other essential rally bits like spare wheels and in the case of the turbo'd cars they also have restrictors which isnt governed in track cars over here yet.
I would LOVE to arrive with my stripped out UR and kick some a*s.
    Is anyone doing something similar

Tight and twisty was always quattro's weak point which is why they shortened the wheelbase in the Sq.
If you want to see a ur kicking *** on track you need to check out Nervas's car on the forum

I had half a dozen people come up to me at a recent track day to find out wtf my car was as all of them had expected me to hold them up in their lightweight track toys through the corners and I hadn't at all and then disappeared on the straights - that's in a fast road spec S2 on fast road tyres. A stripped UR will will be much better if setup and driven properly i.e. not driven like a BMW The number of fast cars that you see driven poorly is amazing. Just do it and have fun

@ error404, that is a brutal track Quattro
I wouldn't be looking to go as extreme as that.
Although I'm excited to hear fairly positive things from you guys.
I guess to start out all I can do is give it good power and lighten the hell out of it,
          Then go from there.

Audi made a fair fist of quattro 80's and early A4's in touring cars, plus the imsa cars and ITC/DTM V8's so the same approach in a Ur shell should be a strong track car... As a standard road car though, they are pretty boomin' useless...

Go for it! Anyone who says a quattro can't cope with corners can't drive
Even a stripped out gt coupe is a good track car

your main adversaries to producing a great track car are a wobbly old chassis, rubish weight distribution and mcstrut suspension.
If you get a decent cage, move as much weight rearwards and do your homework on the suspension you will have a real weapon
What you will be able to do that a jap 4 pot struggles with is pump out 600hp all day long without breaking a sweat

If it's just for track days then you don't need 600bhp and the weight distribution is still a load better than anything FWD but with 4WD, you have loads more grip so can use the power and exit a corner quicker than FWD or RWD. It's only vs. rwd that quattro has a significant disadvantage in terms of weight distribution but they make up for that in corner exit grip and you can just drive them like a big hot hatch and be really aggressive. Basically, learn to drive what you have properly and you'll be as fast as many cars that on paper have an advantage but take a really skilled or brave driver to extract the best from them. Focus on reliability of engine and brakes and tuning the chassis as best you can. Oh, and upgrade the seats, as anything stock isn't up to scratch.

Competition use is rather different though

If he is up against Evos and STis the 4wd advantage is errr........not so much an advantage hence the 600hp

Just to reiterate Rusty's point, donkey's years ago in 19 hundred and freezing to death, I was at Castle Combe at a track day and whilst out on track with my old GT, several quattros of long and short, and a couple of loopy Golfs, the track instructor came out for a blast...

Rather embaressingly, in a 2.0 Montego Estate...

                      He rather annoyingly overtook everything...

I've pushed many of both out the way with a mere 300 Pferde I was approached by a surprised driver of a nicely prepared Evo with over 400bhp the other week after I "flew past" him Sure, if setup and driven by a racer it would have been quicker

The cars to worry about are supercharged Elises and any Caterham with an R in front of the name - they're insanely fast.

All else being equal a 300hp EVO or STi will piss on a 300hp UR or s2, that was my point

Does anyone do decent coilovers for the ur? I think they have to be made/there are some slightly dodgy compbrake ones about?

Can a mac strut not be just as a good if set up well?

Also, what about trying a rear ARB like the earlie ur's etc?

I would like to take my car on track but I think the handleing is a bit too floppy at the moment despite a few upgrades such as koni's and H and R springs.

I have fresh but standard bushes at the moment. Perhaps the first step is solid subframe mounts and or poly bushes?

I looked at changeing to different wheels but they don't look right and are usually heavier and would add unsprung weight.
